The majority of Brazil is tropical whilst some is also dry and desert like
with sub-tropical patches and temperate conditions.
Some of the amazon rainforest is located in north Brazil as it is near the
tropic of Capricorn.
The Amazon rainforest supports lots of the life in Brazil.
Over 3,000 different kinds of fish live in the Amazon river, many feed on plankton while
some have adapted to a diet of fruit and seeds, the amazon river contains 20 different
types of piranha of which lots are vegetarian. The rainforest is also home to over 400
deferent mammal species. One of which is the Jaguar like the domestic cat it can also
climb trees. The river is home to some aquatic mammals such as the mystical pink river
dolphin.
The thick canopy of the rainforest is home to many primates like the black spider
monkey and howler monkeys, most of the primates in the Amazon rainforest feed of the
edible fruit and nuts.
The Amazon is also sanctuary to over 1300 bird species like the iconic Toucan to the tiny
Hummingbird. The birds are also very vulnerable to deforestation. Amazonian species
under threat include the Harpy Eagle and the Hyacinth Macaw. The Hyacinth Macaw
population has dropped to about 6,500. Macaws are also threatened by the pet trade as
the are very attractive.
And now onto reptiles indigenous to the amazon include 20 species of turtle and five
species of boa snake. The black caiman is the amazons largest predator. Related to the
crocodiles, they eat fish and animals such as deer and capybara.
