This document contains details for creating a magazine cover and contents page for a school magazine. It includes research conducted through a survey of the target audience of 16-18 year old students. Key points from the survey are analyzed to determine topics of interest, daily routines, concerns, and demographics of the target group. The document also provides information on generic conventions for magazine covers and contents pages, such as the placement of the masthead, bar code, cover lines and plugs. Success criteria for an effective magazine are outlined.
2. Chosen Set Brief
• Print- preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation
program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine,
featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some

mock-up of the layout of the contents page.

25. Representation
Representation of Eminem
The band Biffy Clyro are represented as dark and
mysterious mainly because of the costume used in the shot.
The two men at the back of the shot are wearing black
which is a dark colour that connotes power, evil and
mystery. The man at the front is wearing white which
connotes faith and purity however he is wearing a hood
over his head which suggests he is attempting to hide his
identity and possibly look taunting and secretive. This
represents them as dark as they are acting like they have
something to hide. It suggests that their music is loud,
strong and their genre is rock. They all have a lot of facial
hair and the man at the front has a tattoo and this again
shows their toughness and suggests a lack of care for
appearance. The framing of the cover suggests that the man
stood in the middle at the front is the lead signer of the
band because he is more predominant than the other two
people. Their facial expressions are serious and almost
look threatening and the fact that the man at the front has
his hand on his chin almost suggests that he is judging the
audience and it represents them as intimidating.
26. Representation
Representation Jay Z
Jay Z is represented as a business man who is
very professional and determined. His facial
expression is serious which represents him as
unhumourous and the direct mode of address
to the audience makes him seem very intense
and powerful. The costume he is wearing is a
grey suit and tie and dress scarf which are
very smart and slick, and it suggests that he
has a lot of money as the suit is designer
looking and the scarf and ring he is wearing
look quite luxurious. His body language
suggests that he is adjusting his suit so that he
looks smart and ‘ready for business’. The
artists’ hair is cut short and sharp and he is
cleanly shaven which represents him as
someone who takes pride in their appearance.
27. Representation
Representation of Lily Allen
The costume Lily Allen is wearing is intended to be provocative
as she is not wearing a blouse or bra, however her pose does not
reveal the front part of her body and therefore is not too
sexually explicit to be on the front of a magazine. The fact that
she is topless but turned away from the camera represents her as
daring and teasing because she is almost provoking the audience
and this also represents her as mischievous and playful. She is
staring at the camera with her finger in her mouth and this again
suggests she is trying to tease the audience however her facial
expression is serious which makes her seem slightly cold and
this matches the theme of grey/ silver on the background and
her shorts which again are quite dull, cold colours to represent
the fact she is trying to be seductive in a serious, stern way. Her
hair and makeup are also dark and she has a smoky eye look
which make her seem almost dark and sinister and this is
supported by the presence of two black panthers which
represent threat and danger. This all fits with the cover line
which is ‘sexy beast’ as lily Allen is represented as both very
sexual but also a mysterious, dark, threatening ‘beast’.
28. Photo Shoot Plan
• Costume: The costume that my model wears needs to be alternative and follow a
‘grunge’ fashion style.
• Hair and Makeup: Bold, extravagant and include dark, black
Smokey eyes. Hair should be big and back combed.
• Facial Expressions
• Shot type

Interview Interview
We interviewed Raven Rose and got the low- down on how music
saved her life; her constant struggle to fight temptation; and she
told us what she really thinks about the crazy rock and roll
industry.
33. Contents Page Analysis
Use of subheadings to
categorize content.
Masthead logo
brands the
contents page.
Issue number is visible so
that readers can differentiate
between issues and see
when the magazine was
published if looking back at it
at a later date.
Page follows a colour
scheme- main
banners are red and
the background is
white. This applies
for the font aswell as
the font colours stick
to white, red and
black. This is so there
is consistency and
the reader can
recognize the theme
of the magazine.
The main articles are
briefly described and the
page numbers are
displayed so the reader
can easily navigate through
the magazine and find the
most exclusive content.
Picture showing one of
the bands featured in the
magazine to excite
readers and show what
the magazine includes.
Description of one of the
main features and the
heading is bigger and bold to
attract more attention as
this is likely to be an article
which many people are
wanting to read so by having
it labelled in bold, they will
be able to see the page
number and therefore find it
easily.
Picture of a feature
included in the
magazine is advertised
here as it is important
content so the reader
will want to see it
clearly from the
contents page.
Large image of one of the
main bands featured in the
magazine. Long shot with
interesting mise-en- scene
attracts the reader and
when a potential reader
opens the page in the shop,
they will be able to see a
successful band and this
might appeal to them and
encourage them to buy the
magazine.
34. Notes on Double Page Magazine Spread
Large medium long shot in the centre of the page taking up majority of the space.
No interviewer questions. A story is being told by the interviewees. Oasis describe the drunken instances
in which they recorded their hit singles and they talk about parties and fights between band members.
The information is relayed to the reader via short paragraphs from all of the band members- introduced
by their name with colons.
Page includes features such as pull quotes, information about a particular album (producer, location,
track listing). Circle shape which gives a brief description of the album and a small picture of the album
cover.
Main picture has a caption box which names all of the band members from left to right.
Picture covers the whole page with masthead and description of the interview placed on top of the
picture. White box strip down the right side of the page with the interview on.
Interview starts off with an introduction which gives background context such as how the band started
off and where they are now, including their main achievements. Interview begins with a sentence which
sets the scene.. ‘Meanwhile Oasis’s heroes, The Stone Roses, were recording their second album just a
mile or so away at Rockfield…’. Then the interview starts with one of the band members describing the
atmosphere on that particular day.
Background is white. Rectangular strips above large pull quotes all follow the same colour scheme.
On each page the first letter of the first paragraph is written in a large, gold font.
Lots of swearing within interviews. Pull quote usually involves profanity.
