Engineer in Mindglory Solutions Ltd., Chennai.
(b) Summarize the following :
Mark Twain’s family moved to Hannibal, a port town on the
Mississippi river. This move had a great impact on young Mark
Twain. He admired the steam boat captains and the many
travellers who passed through the town-circus troupes,
minstrels, religious leaders and daring settlers on their way to
California-all of whom the author later used as characters in
his books. When his father died, Mark Twain, aged twelve,
began working as an apprentice printer. He was successively a
steamboat pilot, prospector, miner and reporter in the Western
territories. He led one of the most exciting and adventurous of
literary lives. His experience furnished him with a wide
knowledge of humanity and a perfect grasp of local customs
and speech that manifests itself so well in his writing.
18. Read the following paragraph and answer the questions that
follow :
(a) Do you ever worry about your memory? Perhaps you go into a
room and forget what you came for, go blank on names, mislay
things? Or there may be something on the tip of your tongue,
but you can’t get it off. Don’t worry. You are perfectly normal. It
is the nature of man to worry about forgetfulness. Human
beings have a prodigious memory. In a few cubic centimeters
the brain stores more information than can be stored in a large
computer. Today neurologists, psychologists, and biologists are
studying the different aspects of memory. There are two types
of memory. Short-term memory; acts only seconds. Long-term
memory is stored probably for life.

Tom Canty is a poor beggar boy who lives in a filthy slum. He
accepts his miserable life because he thinks that everybody
around him leads the same kind of life as he does. Happy with
his lot, he goes about begging in the daytime and getting
thrashed by his father and grandmother at night. The only
saving grace in his life is the kind Father Andrew, a poor priest,
who teaches Tom to read and write. Tom is an eager student.
He learns about kings and princes and soon becomes an expert
on their royal ways. He often escapes into a dream world. Fate
helps him to meet a real prince. His dream of actually becoming
a Prince comes true when he accidentally exchanges places
with Edward, the Prince of Wales.
