This document discusses case studies as a teaching method. It defines a case study as research-based documentation that presents real-world problems without clear solutions. Case studies encourage critical thinking by placing students in complex situations and requiring them to analyze multiple perspectives. They develop skills like problem-solving, decision-making, and collaboration. The document also outlines the structure of a typical case study, including sections for background information, the main problem, and open-ended discussion questions.
2. Introduction to Case-‐Study
• Integrating theory and practice through relevance research based teaching.
• Gain knowledge of how different theoretical perspectives can be used.
• Primary and/or secondary information.

3. Introduction
• A case-‐study is the document based on research.
• Alternative solutions to the problem .
• Alternative solution to be assessed on the basis on ‘contextual’ relevance.

4. Purpose of case study
• Creates a dialogue with students in the class-‐room
• Encourage their critical thinking
• In-‐depth knowledge on the inter-‐functional dynamics .
• A student-centred teaching strategy that can develop critical thinking,
communication, and interpersonal skills with students;
• Having students work through complex, ambiguous, real world problems
• engages students with the course material,
• encouraging them to “see it from an action perspective, rather than analyse it from
a distance”
• allow the application of theoretical concepts…bridging the gap between theory and
practice”

5. Benefits
• It requires of students to research and evaluate multiple sources of data, fostering
information literacy;
• Case method is also effective at developing real world, professional skills;
• Increases student proficiency with written and oral communication, as well as
collaboration and team-work;
• Can provide a rich basis for developing students’ problem-solving and decision-
making skills;
• Can help students to synthesise, evaluate and apply information and concepts
learned in lectures and texts;
• Can bring to life abstract concepts ;
• By placing students in real life situations through case study, they are asked to make
critical decisions and use their factual knowledge to evaluate situations.
