CJ210: Corrections
State Correctional System Project – Spring 2014
The primary objective of this project is to provide students with
a basic understanding of a specific state correctional system.
You will discuss some of the concepts we have covered in the
corrections course. If possible, be creative and add pictures to
your report. However, pictures do not replace the text that
should accompany the pictures. The text should be 3-5 pages
but the document may be longer after including the cover page,
added pictures and the reference page.
The assignment should use the following heading format
(although the information may vary in the body of the article):
Cover Page (sample page listed below):
Name of state correctional system
Include a picture representing the system (i.e., emblem)
Name/Course/Professor/Due date
I. Introduction
a. What state did you choose for your project?
b. What is their state correctional system called?
c. What is their mission/vision statement?
d. Provide a brief history of the system and a
description/picture (if possible) of the organizational chart.
II. Institutional Information (Answer at least three of the below
section)
a. Facility information
i. How many institutions?
ii. Male vs. Female intuitions
iii. What are the security levels?
iv. Do they have a youthful offender population?
b. Death Penalty (only answer if the state has the death penalty)
i. How many inmates are on death row?
ii. What methods of execution are permitted in the state?
iii. How many executions took place last year? Ever?
c. Health Care
i. What type of health care does the prison provide to inmates?
ii. Is there a maternity ward?
iii. Do they have programming for mental health?
iv. Do they have substance abuse treatment?
d. Programming
i. Do they offer college courses?
ii. What other types of education do they offer?
iii. Do they have religion services? Which religions?
iv. What type of vocational programming is offered in their
facilities?
v. Do they have special programming (i.e., Beekeeping; Horse
Program, Dog Adoption)?
e. Special Issues
i. Are gangs a problem in the state prisons?
ii. Are their drug issues in state prisons?
iii. Do they have drug testing? What are the procedures?
iv. What information do they provide about the Prison Rape
Elimination Act (PREA)?
f. Community Corrections
i. Probation/Parole
ii. What are their reentry strategies?
g. Visitation/Contact
i. What are the rules regarding visitation?
ii. Can you send items to inmates?
iii. Can you call inmates?
iv. Do they have victim notification when inmates are released?
III. Conclusion/Critical Reaction (*MUST ANSWER ALL
QUESTIONS*)
a. What did you like best about their system?
b. What did you like least about their system?
c. Do you think their system is effective? What is the evidence?
(hint: look at annual report)
d. Which punishment philosophy(s) does the correction system
implement in their state (i.e., retribution, deterrence,
incapacitation, rehabilitation, and restorative justice)?
