Barriers to Effective Communication Samantha Riley Axia College of University of Phoenix
Barriers to Effective Communication Communication enables human beings to interact in a
meaningful way. It is hence a vital component of coming up with the meanings of situations so as to
derive the intended conclusions. According to Schwartz (2001), communication can be said to be the
process that involves the sending and receipt of messages of information among individuals. The
communication process consists of two things. It involves the sending and receipt of a message. The
message sent and received can be classified into two broad categories. These categories include
non–verbal and verbal messages. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These barriers are found in the organizational setting and they can be broadly divided into barriers
from employees and barriers from employers. Barriers from employees are low levels of motivation,
refusal to cooperate as well as strained relationships with he employer. On the other hand, barriers
from employers include inadequate trust in their workers, inadequate knowledge of clues of a
nonverbal nature such as posture as well as facial expressions etc. For effective communication to
take place, the listener can enhance his listening skills. Fully developed listening skills guarantee the
successful receipt of the message that is heard (Schwartz 2001). Another way of enhancing effective
communication includes avoiding multiple communication channels and doing away with the
various intermediaries. Other strategies as Schwartz (2001) notes include the elimination of
semantic noise and words that may initiate miscommunication. In the organizational setting,
communication barriers can eliminated by coming up or designing a highly flexible organizational
structure that is more transparent as well as dynamic. It is clear that effective communication is only
possible with the elimination of the various barriers. Organizations should ensure that these barriers
are addressed so as to ensure that the communication process is not interrupted at any point.

There are many aspects to the communication process. It is necessary to take into consideration the
definition of communication. Communication is defined as a process involving several steps, among
two or more persons, for the primary purpose of exchanging information (Wallace, 2009). There are
several steps that compose the communication process. Communication requires transmitting an
idea, sending the idea through a medium, receiving the message, understanding the idea, and
providing feedback to the message sender (Wallace, 2009). Transmitting an idea suggests the
adaptation of one or several thoughts and the desire to say these ideas. Often times ... Show more

Third, formal channels require a written record, which may further restrict the flow of information.
This is because many people hesitate to put their thoughts or ideas in writing. Fourth, this form of
communication to respond rapidly to changing situations is enabled. Formal channels offer many
advantages that must also be considered. Formal communication satisfies that all of the
organizations are on the same page. Formal communication is more clear and concise than informal
communication so that there is no confusion regarding the purpose or content of the message.
Formal communication also establishes a paper trail for further use at a later time. When dealing
with informal channels, it must also be taken in consideration the advantages and disadvantages of
its use. Informal channels are the unofficial routes of communication taken by an organization
(Wallace, 2009). These are not seen on an organizational chart, and they may not be official
sanctioned. Informal channels not only serve as a conduit for gossip, but also provide a needed link
within an organization (Wallace, 2009). Informal channels are used within a department in many
ways. When time is a critical factor, this is an instance when informal communication is exercised.
By using informal channels one can cut across lines of authority and responsibility to pass on the
information quickly (Wallace, 2009). Informal channels of communication

Communication is a two–way process that takes practice and time to be fully effective and is very
important in every aspect our personal and professional lives. We communicate every day of our
lives both verbally or nonverbally. The process of verbal communication is the exchanging
information by transmitting an idea, send that idea, receive feedback, understand the idea and the
feedback and provide feedback to the person who sent the message. The main components of
communication are context, encoder, message, medium, decoder, and feedback. The context could
be social, chronological, cultural, or physical. The individual sending the message will ... Show

The four types of barriers to effective communication are emotional barriers, physical barriers,
semantic barriers, and ineffective listening (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Emotional barriers can
be present in either the sender or the receiver and may be based on personal experiences or
expectations. Physical barriers are considered to be an obstruction in which it makes it difficult to
allow free flow of information. For example, a physical barrier can be an officer reporting
information regarding a crime or equipment malfunctions to a supervisor. A semantic barrier is the
study of the development and meaning of words. In the Criminal Justice system officers can
interpret a term, such as "juvenile delinquent" in different ways. This can mean that the juvenile is
hard core and under age youth or a youth acting out. Having the ability to understand the meaning of
these terms can result in bad communication for the organization. Ineffective listening is the failure
to hear or receive the speaker's message. I have found that causes of ineffective listening are
uninteresting topics, critiquing of the speaker, emotional involvement, and failure to adjust to
distractions and emotional content or offensive words. Effective listening requires an environment
and training to be conductive to concentration of the speaker and receptiveness of the receiver.

Mr. Liggins
The recent merger between Clear Channel Communications Inc. and AMFM has presented a rare
opportunity for Radio One, Inc. The proposed divestiture of Clear Channel will be the largest in the
history of the industry. Radio One, Inc. can acquire 12 established urban stations in the top 50
markets, which rarely become available. Market analyst have already speculated on the possible
acquisition, causing Radio One's stock price to rise from the mid–$40s to $97 a share! The trading

In 1999, a rare opportunity was presented to Radio One, Inc. Clear Channel Communications, Inc.
was set to merge with AMFM, creating the largest radio company in the world. Although recent
actions have relaxed the national ownership cap on the limit of stations allowed to be owned by one
entity, Clear Channel would still have to divest nearly 100 stations in 37 markets. Radio One could
acquire 12 stations from Clear Channel, which would allow Radio One to draw more African–
American listeners than any other media vehicle targeting that audience, including BET. The
acquisition would double the size of Radio One, including obtaining a station in Los Angeles, the
fourth largest African–American market in the United States.
Benefits and Risks of Acquisition The acquisition would allow Radio One to acquire stations in the
top 50 African–American markets. Radio One has always produced broadcasts that target that group,
which is the largest minority group in America. Based on the information from the case, the
African–American minority group is expected to experience 60% faster population growth than the
general population. The minority group has also experiencing 150% faster income growth between
1980 and 1995. African–Americans listen to the radio on average 24% longer than the general
population. That information is favorable to the acquisition decision, as the new markets should
experience an increase in advertising revenue. One concern is that

COMMUNICATION AT THE WORKPLACE
1.0 Overview
Communication in the workplace is required in developing, maintaining and establishing the
required good working relationships in the firm. Communication refers to the exchange as well as
the creation of thoughts, emotions, ideas and understanding between an individual (a sender) and
another (receiver). For effective running of the organization, it is essential for management/manager
to communicate effectively with employees. Each party ought to be kept up to date with all aspect of
operations critical for smooth running of the firm. To achieve this everything from thoughts, feelings
or ideas must be properly communicated at the workplace.
Communication is viewed in three variations:
 Linear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, for the sanctity of the place, all within the firm require effective use of verbal
communication that uses explicitly known and spoken words as well as ensuring that the stress and
tone of voice with which the words are expressed are appropriate so that each person understand the
other.
Advantages of Oral communication are:
 Feedback is quick.
 Helps the receiver to evaluate the genuineness of the message a face–to–face conversation, by
reading facial expression and body language.
Disadvantage of oral communication
 User is limited in how deeply he/she thinks about what he/she is delivering, so this can be
counted as ineffective communication.
Non–verbal Communication
Within the workplace environment, it s important to appreciate the need for non–verbal
communication as it plays a key role. Non–verbal communication is a form of communication
through sending and receiving wordless message. Although, sometimes referred to as body
language, it extends beyond that.
Non–verbal communication among others includes facial expressions, tone of voice even to less
obvious messages as dress, postures and spatial distance between two or more people.
Thus, to ensure low turnover and increase in productivity, measures ought to be put in place to

Identification with the Little Prince's Fox Throughout the short children's novel, The Little Prince by
Antoine de Saint–Exupery, the Little Prince encounters a variety of different characters, all showing
him or teaching him something about life. My favorite character and the one that I can connect to
most is the Fox. The fox enlightens him on what it is truly is to be tamed. He shows him that you are
responsible for whatever you have tamed, whether it be a pet, a person, or even a rose. When the
Little Prince first stumbled across the fox, he would not go anywhere near him. The fox informed
him that if he wanted to get to know him, he would have to have patience and tame him. He then
further explained how he has never been tamed before, and requested that the Little Prince would do
so. Little by little, each day the Little Prince would get closer and closer to the Fox, at last being
able to pet him. The Fox grew to anticipate seeing the Little Prince at the same time daily, located in
the same place. He grew to love the Little Prince, leading them to establish ties. The Little Prince
was not just any little boy to him anymore. Now that the Fox was tamed, it is time for the Little
Prince to leave. The Fox begins to weep and the Little Princes worries that taming the Fox did not
do him any good. However, the Fox goes onto explain that because of him the golden color of the

Most employees, customers and the management of the organization were aware of the decisions

Discuss at least three (3) reasons why you perceived the communication to be effective, and explain
the resulting impact to the business.
The communication was affective because during verbal communication the voices of the speakers
were very clear. It was noted that audience did not ask for repetition of what was spoken or seeking
clarifications from the speaker. The channels of communication used by various workers, employees
and management where delivered the intended messages to the audience. Organizational
communication aimed at using communication to improve employee productivity and awareness of
their products and services to the potential customers. The communication channels were very
effective in meeting the firm's objectives because most of the targets were achieved (Lasater, 2010).
In the organization emails and company's website were very reliable channels of communication
that most workers preferred. Most messages used appropriate language to improve clarity and
understandability by the audience. The messages are direct, memorable and honest hence the
audience was keen in understanding the content, which is the organization's goal. The messages
helped employees to be associated by the firm because the messages contain common terminologies

Abstract:
Vehicular Communication systems ,an application of wireless communication is an increasing area
of communication between the vehicles and other roadside infrastructure in which allocation of
wireless channels are used to share information among vehicles and infrastructure and hence these
channels are used for the development and implementation of vehicular communication systems. The
10 MHz wide channels in 5.9GHz spectrum band are reserved for this purpose by two main
protocols the WAVE standards proposed by IEEE in the United States and ETSI ITS–G5 in
Europe. But still the cross –channel interference affect the vehicular communication systems. So to
diminish these problems, this paper presents the implementation of two–stage lowpass equiripple
FIR filter, target to be integrated with digital baseband receiver chain of vehicular communication
platform. The filter was evaluated, optimized and tested with the simulation results and FPGA
implementation to provide the low delay generated in operation and to show the effectiveness of the
proposed filter.

REAL 92.3: Company Analysis
Origin of Company The radio station is REAL 92.3, and has been in existence since 1952. There, it
operated as "KFAC", a classical music radio station until the summer of 1989, where it was bought
by Evergreen Media. It was then changed to "KKBT 92.3 The Beat", and played adult rock, dance
music and adult contemporary. The changed station failed, and went through a number of other
genres before developing into urban contemporary in 1991. In 1999, the company that owned the
radio station merged with Clear Channel Communications Inc. and was renamed "KCMG Mega
92.3". At this point KCMG Mega 92.3 had moved from playing urban contemporary to urban oldies
and finally to AC oldies. The station would not become known as "REAL 92.3" until February of
2015, when iHeartMedia, the holding company of Clear Channel Communications Inc., announced
that the station would go back to being urban contemporary. iHeartMedia, the conglomerate that
owns REAL 92.3, started in San Antonio 1972 with one radio station. Then known as Clear Channel
Communications Inc., it would branch out of pure broadcasting and into billboard advertising in
1997. There it swelled to massive size seemingly instantaneously, and in 1999 ... Show more content

Analysis Of The Article ' Gop Fox Circus Act ' By Reed...
In the article "GOP–Fox Circus Act", Reed Richardson argues that although both the GOP and Fox
have conservative political values, they are ultimately harmful to each other's agendas because of
their differing political goals. Both organizations are lacking popularity in recent years so they are
struggling to find new ways to gain an audience. The GOP wants to find a way to get their ideas to a
wide variety of people, whereas Fox is promoting more liberal views to increase the ratings of their
programs. On one hand, the GOP's reputation is hurt by the inaccuracy of Fox's reporting. On the
other hand, Fox is tied down by the conservative views of the GOP, thus restraining Fox from
gaining a larger audience. Journalist Reed Richardson wrote this article for The National, a liberal
newspaper, in 2013, so the events and issues that he is speaking of are still relevant to this day. Due
to the differences of political views between the author and the subject matter, there is plenty of
room for biased statements and opinions. Does Richardson provide enough evidence of the harmful
effects of the Fox and GOP relationship? Richardson clearly and meticulously establishes the
problems that both organizations face in the pursuit of their political goals with the use of statistics,
reliable sources, and thorough evaluation of events; however Richardson constantly provides the
reader with a biased argument when discussing the current state of Fox. Richardson successfully

Barriers to Effective Communication Effective communication is a major element to success in any
relationship, business, or organization. Communication barriers attempt to impede, and in some
instances stop, the successful completion of the communication process. Law Enforcement agencies
are susceptible to the consequences of ineffective communication and should work toward reducing
and eliminating barriers blocking the flow of communication. Organizational flaws in the entangled

barriers resulting in confusion and inefficiencies throughout the system. Law enforcement agencies

Criminal justice professionals can overcome emotional barriers by using peer support systems
within the police department or support from outside sources (Wallace & Roberson, 2009).
Physical barriers are obstructions that interfere with movement of a message and are the hardest to
overcome. The weather, distance, and failures in technology are a few examples of physical barriers
a police officer may encounter (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Some barriers are out of the
officer's control and cannot be overcome quickly such as an ice storm that becomes a physical
barrier when power and telephone lines go down ending communication.
Semantic barriers consist of language differences and ambiguous word meanings and prevent a clear
exchange of ideas resulting in failed communication. Hiring a diverse group of officers can reduce
language barriers and choosing words carefully with the receiver in mind can help ease semantic
barriers.
Ineffective listening is another barrier present in the criminal justice system and occurs from
disinterest, speaker bias, emotions, distractions, and words that invoke emotion (Wallace &
Roberson, 2009). Every officer needs active listening skills. An officer using active listening skills
can diffuse dangerous situations when armed with a clear understanding of the circumstances.
Active listening is different from hearing. Hearing is an automatic response to sound and

The columbine high school shooting which occurred in April 20, 1999 was a tragedy that left 15
people killed and 20 seriously injured. The main communication problems in this shooting were
brought about by the many agencies that were involved as well as the different sources that were
used. The communication problem was said to relate to a technical limitation that saw the separate
agencies experience direct communication problems with each other. This supported by the fact that
with over the 40 agencies involved in the incident, it would be inevitable for them to be operating on
the different channels of emergency radio there are in addition to on the different radio bandwidth
and spectrum parts (Stillman, 2012). For instance, the Sherriff's office operated on the VHF

Among others, the most important problem that created a dilemma to the officials is that of the
different communication channels used by the agencies. If the agencies used the same channel such
as the VHF frequency only, it would have resulted in overcrowding and confusion in the frequency
bottlenecking the entire operation. On the other hand, using different channels also meant that it
would inconvenience their direct communication. Communications can break or make the

Essay about Equal Opportunity, written by Walter Mosely
In this short story, Equal Opportunity, written by Walter Mosely, Socrates Furtlow, an ex–convict,
faces the dilemma of getting a job. Socrates served 27 years in prison after killing two of his friends
while drunken. Furtlow was now living life as a bumb who went around selling old bottles and cans
to make a living. This story tells his struggle to find honorable work as a black man in society
because of his background. He ended up lying on his application because he was afraid of what
people might think. Although there was discrimination and disrespect not being completely honest
with people may come back to haunt you later.

Everyone should have an equal opportunity in getting a job and at least a fair chance with an
application. After Socrates and Anton discussed their rights and the law the assistant manager went
to the main office to fetch and application. The elevated office looked over all the checkout counters
and where Socrates stood waiting. Socrates was then center of attention to all the bag boys and
checkers as they all knew their boss, Anton was unhappy. Anton and an older white woman
exchanged a few words then she handed him the application and he stormed back down to Socrates.
Rudely handing him the app Anton was about to go on with his day but Socrates wanted a pencil to
fill it out and give it back. He had come a long way to turn in an application not just receive a sheet
of paper and wasn't leaving until he did so. Thirty minutes later Socrates stood at the foot of the
stairs leading up to the main office with his almost completed application in hand. Nearly forty
minutes passed and he knew they could see him and he could see them but he waited patiently, on
the outside, though inside he was thinking of throwing a brick through the window. He had a few

Barriers to Effective Communication
CJA304
In this paper, I will describe the process of communication as well as its components, describe the
difference between listening and hearing, describe the formal and informal channels of
communication, and suggest strategies that may be implemented to overcome communication
barriers. Communication can be described as "a process involving several steps, among two or more
persons, for the primary purpose of exchanging information" (Wallace & Roberson, 2009).
There are two types of communication that we use in our everyday lives: verbal and nonverbal
communication. In order to be an effective communicator, a person should consider the components

Differences Between Listening and Hearing Two important aspects of the communication process
are hearing and listening. While both are fundamental to the process, they have two separate and
distinct functions. Often, people use these terms interchangeably. To do so is incorrect, their true
definitions are different. Understanding the differences can enhance relationships with employees,
co–workers, and superiors. Knowing the difference can even improve job performance. Here is a
good analogy of the terms: "Hearing is the physical sense of perceiving sound. Listening is a mental
exercise requiring diligent intention and constant practice. One is a sense we are born with; the other
a skill to attain" (Meiners, July). Wallace and Roberson wrote a list of tasks a good listener
performs. They are concentrates on a speaker, interprets the speaker's words, evaluates the meaning,
and responds effectively. There are four variables that will affect this list of tasks; a listener must be
able to take in what is being said, the speaker must be able to have the ability to keep the listener's
attention span, the speaker must also be able to keep the listener's interest peaked, and the
environment in which the communication is taking place should be conducive to listening.

Clear Channel and the Cultural and Socio–Political Ramifications of Media Consolidation
I.INTRODUCTION
In 1996, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act thereby lifting restrictions on media
ownership that had been in place for over sixty years (Moyers 2003; Bagdikian 2000: xviii). It was
now possible for a single media company to own not just two radio stations in any given local
market, but eight. On the national level, there was no longer any limit on the number of stations a
company could own – the Act abandoned the previous nation–wide ownership cap of forty stations
(20 FM and 20 AM). This "anti–regulatory sentiment in government" has continued and in 2004 the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a new rule that ... Show more content on

2004: 3; Chen 2003).
While the phenomenon of rampant media consolidation made possible by the government's
deregulatory practices has been greeted with general enthusiasm by the corporate world, it has left
others in society gravely concerned. Media critics and cultural studies observers have voiced
concerns over the negative consequences they believe accompany the phenomenon. They see the
erosion of the idea that radio is to serve the public interest; they see a stifling of diversity and less
choice for the consumer; and they see a threat to American democracy in the form of a possibly
insurmountable corporate media hegemony. And for many, Clear Channel is "the 'poster child' for
what's wrong with media deregulation" (Cornell Univ. 2004: 66).
Unfortunately however, a February 2004 poll by the Pew Research Center found that "72 percent of
the public has heard nothing about the media ownership [and consolidation] debate" (Connell 2004).
Understanding how corporate mergers and consolidation affect the way in which the media function
(especially in the realms of production and distribution) and how the media in turn directly impacts

Both formal and informal means of communication help facilitate the transfer of important
information within a law enforcement organization.
Barriers to effective communication
There are four basic barriers that hinder effective communication, emotional barriers, physical
barriers, semantic barriers, and ineffective listening. All of these barriers separately or combined can
contribute to a lack of effective communication.
To communicate successfully one must express thoughts and emotions clearly. Sometimes the
emotional barriers can hinder one 's ability to effectively communicate. Physical barriers are the
facets of the surroundings that obstruct the flow of information. This could be radios which are not
working correctly and prevent the officer from transmitting his communications. Anything that
prevents or slows down the progress of the giving or receiving of information is considered a
physical barrier. Semantics is another form of communication barrier, which results in the inability
to communicate clearly. Semantic problems occur when there is a failure to agree on the connotation
of certain expressions (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). The meaning of certain terms may not be
interpreted the same by different people.
Ineffective listening is the final barrier to effective communications. This can be described as not

New Models Of Doing Business: Pandora Radio As if the music industry has not seen enough

the revolution is not about how the music is stored and collected (LP/CD/MP3 transformation), or
how music is purchased (Record Stores/ iTunes transformation), but how we actually listen to
music. Pandora Radio has created an amazing technology, which allows users to create and

In contrast, there exist many intermediaries with the traditional radio business model. Disc Jockeys
select the music to broadcast and station managers determine what type of genre and audience to
target. With this old way of doing business, satisfying the customer was a never–ending challenge of
hit and miss, where ratings were correlated to what was being played. With Pandora, customer
satisfaction is inherent in their model. Users create their own stations to listen to, and are constantly
customizing stations to tailor to their tastes. The argument can be posited that while Pandora does
possess a new high technology and a new way of doing business, the existing technology support
network cannot support Pandora–a large portion of radio is listened to people commuting in cars
where an internet connection is beyond the normal means of consumers. This is a false assumption.
The technology support network is currently undergoing change to meet the demand for internet
connectivity anytime, anywhere. Technologies such as 3G and 4G allow devices to connect to the
internet anywhere, and Pandora is currently developing players for automobiles, and applications for
smart phones have already been developed and launched (Yarrow). Pandora's effort to allow users to

(a)
Status/Role
The sender and receiver of a message may be of equal status within a hierarchy (e.g. managers in an

owner/clients).
This difference in status sometimes affects the effectiveness of the communication process.

Cultural Differences
Cultural differences, both within or outside the organisation (for example, inter–departmental
dealings and communication with outside organisations or ethnic minorities) may impede the
communication process.

Length of Communication
The length of the message also affects the communication process. You need to be sure that it serves

Today the life revolves around media, it is on people's phones, media decorate their walls, and for
some media is their job. Since media is such an inescapable part of the modern landscape it is
significant that we as individuals understand how the media works and how it affects us. In this
course, the nature of the media has been unraveled to reveal the ways that it has impacted society
and how it has done this. This class has made me became more critical of the media in my life and
now even without thinking I recognize patterns, and in some cases toxic themes in the media I
consume. Looking back on this semester and what I have learned I can see that I have become more
media literate in many ways, primarily in the areas of awareness and analysis. I have become more
aware of the way media is constructed. Some things that have stood out to me since I have started
this course is for example the other day when I flew into the ST. Louis airport after Thanksgiving
break one of the monitors in baggage claim said that it was "CLear Channel TV" before this course I
do not know what clear channel was and I knew that the entertainment business was an oligopoly
but I did not realize the extent. Seeing this was a moment of realization, that what I read was real,
this one company has its hands in every pot. I have also noticed how much media means to people, I
was speaking to one of my friends and I mentioned that I thought marvel was better that DC and she
became very upset at me. It occurred to me that being a DC comics fan was a part of her identity,
before I knew that people took entertainment personally but it was not actively looking for it. I have
increased my ability to analyze the media I consume, now I am more aware of the way industries
target audiences. One of the easiest ways this can be seen is in commercials, advertisers make there
for a specific audience, video game commercials are a good example Game of Wart has a woman in
its commercials who speaks in an alluring voice and invites audiences to come join her. She is there
for the male gaze, men are the desired customers that companies look for, so she is there as a way of

fulfill any of these four functions effectively. In the following three scenarios I will choose the
proper communication channel and defend my reasoning for that choice.

Communicating With The Employees To explain what happened to the employees and to give them
the new login and password, an email would be the most appropriate channel of communication.
Email would be the best choice because you can send a very quick message to several people at
once. It is also necessary to convey the login and password information in a clear way with no
chance of misinterpretation.
Scenario Three In this scenario, due to budget issues, four out of ten employees at a small editing
company will need to be let go. It is necessary to communicate with al of the employees that there
will be a reduction in the workforce. It is also necessary to communicate with the affected
employees that they are being let go.
Communicating With All The Employees The best way to communicate the fact that there are going
to have to be cutbacks in the workforce would be a written memo to all of the employees. This
ensures that the message will be well thought out and clear (Robbins, Judge 2011 p.347) while
giving a more personal touch than just a mass email.
Communicating With Affected Employees
Informing an employee that they are being let go is a very delicate situation that requires a very

needs to understand that this was a difficult decision and that it was not taken lightly; that it is

Communication
Many managers devote a significant proportion of their time to communications both within and
outside the business.
Communication can be simply defined as the flow of information from one person to another.
Effective communications are, therefore, vital to the success of the business, since the delegation of
work, the feedback of information and the controlling of the business all rely on accurate, quick and

Good communication will reduce conflict and will prevent any misunderstandings of what is

Quantitative communication involves the transmission and interpretation of data and numerical

Qualitative communication involves the use of language, either spoken or written. However, these
messages are often complicated by the use of non–verbal communication (e.g. body language),
which can often confuse the recipient of the message and lead to the misinterpretation of the

The transmitter then chooses the communication channel that he wishes to use in order to send it to
the receiver (the target for the message). On receipt of the message, the receiver will decode it (i.e.
interpret what the message is conveying) and act upon it as necessary.

The Communication Structure Of A Geographically...
The purpose of the research article (article) is to explore three specific topics regarding the
communication structure of a geographically distributed software development team: the observable
behavior of the organization in reference to Conway's law, difficulties encountered by
geographically distributed teams, and potential solutions for these difficulties. Conway's law
suggests that the resulting product of an organization will take on characteristics of the
organization's communication systems. This would suggest that a large geographically segregated
team, which faces communication barriers as a result, would produce a product reflective of the
barriers.
The article states that geographically distributed teams will face difficulty in the exchange of
information. Teams must use a common language, with agreed upon attributes. These types of teams
develop software systems individually, which must then work together. This would require great
coordination through effective communication. The article makes the point that Conway's law
dictates that teams coordinate their efforts, while Frederick Brooks suggests that this is not so easy
to achieve. Advancement in communication technologies has helped to tackle some of the
communication barriers that distributed teams face. The article justifies the study by stating that
existing research is not clear on the benefits of applying Conway's law to this specific situation.

Both forms of communication are used in TSL through the examples mentioned above.
Horizontal Communication takes place between two or more people who are subordinates working
in the same department. It is one of the most frequently used channels of communication between
people of the same level. The message flows not only up and down but also sideways where the
views of each other are made known and decisions are arrived at quickly. There is no superior or
subordinate relationship.
Diagonal Communication includes the horizontal flow of information as well as interaction across
different levels of an organisation's hierarchy. Diagonal communication is used to speed up the flow
of communication. It makes effective efforts for achieving organisational goals.
Grapevine Communication is an informal method of communication, which develops within an
organisation: gossip. Gossip spreads and covers a lot of ground like vines do. There are
disadvantages to grapevine communication: the spread of unnecessary gossip can be dangerous to
the organisation if allowed to grow without monitoring. It may result in character assassination or
provoke unstable people. The grapevine channel can be moderated but not eliminated.

Rachel's Quest for independence
I think Rachel was looking for the ways for her independence and willing to protect Bert during the
trial. Rachel believed that Bert was innocent.
Rachel was in love with Bert, she knew that Bert was not a criminal and she wanted him to confess
the court and the town's people that he had done wrong, and it was all a joke and he was sorry for
that. Rachel said to Bert, "Bert, why don't you tell `em it was all a joke? Tell `em you didn't mean to
break a law, and you won't do it again." This clearly shows that she was worried about him and
wanted to help him. But she knew that what he had done was bad. And she was also quite sure that
he would not win the trial against the mayor. Her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that since her childhood she had never known any comfort from her father and he had
always been cruel to her.
In court, when she was under oath, she was asked a lot of questions. Her answers from one side she
tried to tell the truth from one side, and from the other she was to protect. Bert she did not want to
do him any harm, though she knew her father would not be pleased with her answers. It was clear
she demonstrated her independent views and ideas there.
The battle between two lawyers showed that Mr. Drummond was right. He was a famous journalist
and most famous orator. He battled at the court with weighty arguments and a tremendous speech,
and he won, having destroyed Mr. Brady. Mr. Drummond's arguments and his witnesses, fifteen
scientists, thought they were not allowed to testify at the trial proved that Bert was innocent and that
Rachel's independent views were right. Rachel understood that earlier she had not really thought
very much. She said, "I was always afraid of what I might think. A thought is like a child in our
body. It has to be born.
If it dies inside you, part of you dies too!"
When Bert won they could not remain in the town, because everybody would be against Bert, and
Bert would not be able to get a job there. Though Bert won the townspeople trusted the Bible more
than science, because they were very religious. And it was quite clear they would continue to trust
the Bible.
Rachel's behaviour during the trial,

Cja 304 Week 1 Barriers to Effective Communication Samantha Riley Axia College of University of Phoenix Barriers to Effective Communication Communication enables human beings to interact in a meaningful way. It is hence a vital component of coming up with the meanings of situations so as to derive the intended conclusions. According to Schwartz (2001), communication can be said to be the process that involves the sending and receipt of messages of information among individuals. The communication process consists of two things. It involves the sending and receipt of a message. The message sent and received can be classified into two broad categories. These categories include non–verbal and verbal messages. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These barriers are found in the organizational setting and they can be broadly divided into barriers from employees and barriers from employers. Barriers from employees are low levels of motivation, refusal to cooperate as well as strained relationships with he employer. On the other hand, barriers from employers include inadequate trust in their workers, inadequate knowledge of clues of a nonverbal nature such as posture as well as facial expressions etc. For effective communication to take place, the listener can enhance his listening skills. Fully developed listening skills guarantee the successful receipt of the message that is heard (Schwartz 2001). Another way of enhancing effective communication includes avoiding multiple communication channels and doing away with the various intermediaries. Other strategies as Schwartz (2001) notes include the elimination of semantic noise and words that may initiate miscommunication. In the organizational setting, communication barriers can eliminated by coming up or designing a highly flexible organizational structure that is more transparent as well as dynamic. It is clear that effective communication is only possible with the elimination of the various barriers. Organizations should ensure that these barriers are addressed so as to ensure that the communication process is not interrupted at any point. Reference Schwartz, A.E. (2001). Communication Skills. Formal communication satisfies that all of the organizations are on the same page. The four types of barriers to effective communication are emotional barriers, physical barriers, semantic barriers, and ineffective listening (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Emotional barriers can be present in either the sender or the receiver and may be based on personal experiences or expectations. Physical barriers are considered to be an obstruction in which it makes it difficult to allow free flow of information. For example, a physical barrier can be an officer reporting information regarding a crime or equipment malfunctions to a supervisor. A semantic barrier is the study of the development and meaning of words. In the Criminal Justice system officers can interpret a term, such as "juvenile delinquent" in different ways. This can mean that the juvenile is hard core and under age youth or a youth acting out. Having the ability to understand the meaning of these terms can result in bad communication for the organization. Ineffective listening is the failure to hear or receive the speaker's message. I have found that causes of ineffective listening are uninteresting topics, critiquing of the speaker, emotional involvement, and failure to adjust to distractions and emotional content or offensive words. Effective listening requires an environment and training to be conductive to concentration of the speaker and receptiveness of the receiver. In the article "GOP–Fox Circus Act", Reed Richardson argues that although both the GOP and Fox have conservative political values, they are ultimately harmful to each other's agendas because of their differing political goals. Both organizations are lacking popularity in recent years so they are struggling to find new ways to gain an audience. The GOP wants to find a way to get their ideas to a wide variety of people, whereas Fox is promoting more liberal views to increase the ratings of their programs. On one hand, the GOP's reputation is hurt by the inaccuracy of Fox's reporting. On the other hand, Fox is tied down by the conservative views of the GOP, thus restraining Fox from gaining a larger audience. Journalist Reed Richardson wrote this article for The National, a liberal newspaper, in 2013, so the events and issues that he is speaking of are still relevant to this day. The main communication problems in this shooting were brought about by the many agencies that were involved as well as the different sources that were used. The communication problem was said to relate to a technical limitation that saw the separate agencies experience direct communication problems with each other. This supported by the fact that with over the 40 agencies involved in the incident, it would be inevitable for them to be operating on the different channels of emergency radio there are in addition to on the different radio bandwidth and spectrum parts (Stillman, 2012). Communication can be described as "a process involving several steps, among two or more persons, for the primary purpose of exchanging information" (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Differences Between Listening and Hearing Two important aspects of the communication process are hearing and listening. While both are fundamental to the process, they have two separate and distinct functions. Often, people use these terms interchangeably. To do so is incorrect, their true definitions are different. Understanding the differences can enhance relationships with employees, co–workers, and superiors. Knowing the difference can even improve job performance. Here is a good analogy of the terms: "Hearing is the physical sense of perceiving sound. Listening is a mental exercise requiring diligent intention and constant practice. One is a sense we are born with; the other a skill to attain" (Meiners, July). Wallace and Roberson wrote a list of tasks a good listener performs. They are concentrates on a speaker, interprets the speaker's words, evaluates the meaning, and responds effectively. There are four variables that will affect this list of tasks; a listener must be able to take in what is being said, the speaker must be able to have the ability to keep the listener's attention span, the speaker must also be able to keep the listener's interest peaked, and the environment in which the communication is taking place should be conducive to listening. Clear Channel and the Cultural and Socio–Political Ramifications of Media Consolidation I.INTRODUCTION In 1996, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act thereby lifting restrictions on media ownership that had been in place for over sixty years (Moyers 2003; Bagdikian 2000: xviii). It was now possible for a single media company to own not just two radio stations in any given local market, but eight. On the national level, there was no longer any limit on the number of stations a company could own – the Act abandoned the previous nation–wide ownership cap of forty stations (20 FM and 20 AM). While the phenomenon of rampant media consolidation made possible by the government's deregulatory practices has been greeted with general enthusiasm by the corporate world, it has left others in society gravely concerned. Media critics and cultural studies observers have voiced concerns over the negative consequences they believe accompany the phenomenon. They see the erosion of the idea that radio is to serve the public interest; they see a stifling of diversity and less choice for the consumer; and they see a threat to American democracy in the form of a possibly insurmountable corporate media hegemony. And for many, Clear Channel is "the 'poster child' for what's wrong with media deregulation" (Cornell Univ. 2004: 66). Unfortunately however, a February 2004 poll by the Pew Research Center found that "72 percent of the public has heard nothing about the media ownership [and consolidation] debate" (Connell 2004). Sometimes the emotional barriers can hinder one 's ability to effectively communicate. Physical barriers are the facets of the surroundings that obstruct the flow of information. This could be radios which are not working correctly and prevent the officer from transmitting his communications. Anything that prevents or slows down the progress of the giving or receiving of information is considered a physical barrier. Semantics is another form of communication barrier, which results in the inability to communicate clearly. Semantic problems occur when there is a failure to agree on the connotation of certain expressions (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Since media is such an inescapable part of the modern landscape it is significant that we as individuals understand how the media works and how it affects us. In this course, the nature of the media has been unraveled to reveal the ways that it has impacted society and how it has done this. This class has made me became more critical of the media in my life and now even without thinking I recognize patterns, and in some cases toxic themes in the media I consume. Looking back on this semester and what I have learned I can see that I have become more media literate in many ways, primarily in the areas of awareness and analysis. I have become more aware of the way media is constructed. Some things that have stood out to me since I have started this course is for example the other day when I flew into the ST. Louis airport after Thanksgiving break one of the monitors in baggage claim said that it was "CLear Channel TV" before this course I do not know what clear channel was and I knew that the entertainment business was an oligopoly but I did not realize the extent. Seeing this was a moment of realization, that what I read was real, this one company has its hands in every pot. I have also noticed how much media means to people, I was speaking to one of my friends and I mentioned that I thought marvel was better that DC and she became very upset at me. It occurred to me that being a DC comics fan was a part of her identity, before I knew that people took entertainment personally but it was not actively looking for it. I have increased my ability to analyze the media I consume, now I am more aware of the way industries target audiences. One of the easiest ways this can be seen is in commercials, advertisers make there for a specific audience, video game commercials are a good example Game of Wart has a woman in its commercials who speaks in an alluring voice and invites audiences to come join her. The purpose of the research article (article) is to explore three specific topics regarding the communication structure of a geographically distributed software development team: the observable behavior of the organization in reference to Conway's law, difficulties encountered by geographically distributed teams, and potential solutions for these difficulties. Conway's law suggests that the resulting product of an organization will take on characteristics of the organization's communication systems. This would suggest that a large geographically segregated team, which faces communication barriers as a result, would produce a product reflective of the barriers. The article states that geographically distributed teams will face difficulty in the exchange of information. Teams must use a common language, with agreed upon attributes. These types of teams develop software systems individually, which must then work together. This would require great coordination through effective communication. The article makes the point that Conway's law dictates that teams coordinate their efforts, while Frederick Brooks suggests that this is not so easy to achieve.
