Beyond Monitoring | Leveraging Unified IT Performance Management for Patient ...eG Innovations
Application and desktop virtualization offer so much promise for smart growth, flexibility and cost savings in healthcare IT today, but along with this potential comes substantial risk. Poor performance and a bad end-user experience can degrade productivity, inflate management costs and, worst of all, negatively impact quality of care and patient satisfaction. At the same time, the healthcare IT infrastructure has increased in both scale and complexity. Hence, administrators struggle to determine when a slowdown happens what is the cause: Citrix? VMware? Storage? Windows? The application?
View these slides from our webinar where, along with HiMSS, Wendy Howard, Infrastructure Engineer with St. Charles Healthcare and Bala Vaidhinathan, CTO with eG Innovations, discussed how implementing unified performance-management powered a transformation from difficult, slow and reactive performance troubleshooting to well-planned, strategic rollouts, proactive maintenance, simple executive reporting and rapid caregiver support.
Choosing a Citrix Monitoring Strategy: Key Capabilities and Pitfalls to AvoideG Innovations
Citrix performance monitoring has been gaining a lot of attention and interest. In this presentation, we outline key requirements that any Citrix monitoring solution should support. We analyze the built-in Citrix monitoring tools: Citrix Director, Citrix NetScaler Insight and the Microsoft SCOM management packs and discuss their capabilities and limitations. The need to have at least three different consoles for monitoring a Citrix infrastructure makes monitoring and diagnosis very inefficient. We discuss how the eG Enterprise solution integrates with the built-in Citrix tools and provides 360 degree unified monitoring for a Citrix infrastructure with automated root-cause diagnosis.
Choosing a citrix monitoring strategy key capabilities needed and pitfalls to...eG Innovations
Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop are two of the most performance sensitive technologies in use in enterprise networks today. Slow logins, frequent session disconnects and slow screen refreshes are just some of the common complaints that Citrix administrators have to deal with.
Furthermore, often when a user complains that their desktop is slow or an application is slow to launch, the issue is not in the Citrix tiers – but instead in the network, the virtualization platform, or storage tiers. End-to-end visibility, root-cause diagnosis and proactive alerting are therefore key requirements for Citrix administrators.
Watch this CUGC webinar by Bala Vaidhinathan, CTO of eG Innovations, as he discusses -
- Key requirements for Citrix performance monitoring
- Where Citrix Director helps, and its limitations
- When you will need to consider Citrix NetScaler Insight Center

How to Get the Fastest Possible Citrix Logon Times?eG Innovations
Logon is a user's first interaction with the Citrix digital workspace service, and hence, a slow logon can influence a user's opinion of the service in a way that no other metric can. Therefore, logon time is the #1 key performance indicator (KPI) in Citrix environments.
Slow logons have an impact not just on user perception, but also on productivity. When each logon takes minutes — maybe on multiple systems — it results in lost work time and costs the business. So, it is imperative that logons be as quick and non-intrusive as possible. But how can we make this happen?
Learn some of the best practices for Citrix Logon time optimization.
The "One Monitor": Tranform MS SCOM into an End-to-End Monitoring & Diagnosis...eG Innovations
Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) is a leading monitoring platform for Microsoft applications. However, SCOM is limited in its support for non-Microsoft systems and applications (e.g., Citrix, SAP, Siebel, VMware, Oracle, Sybase, DB2, Java, etc.).
To extend SCOM for heterogeneous environments, multiple management packs are often deployed - one for each non-Microsoft platform. But the lack of integration between management packs leads to long problem identification and diagnosis cycles, resulting in poor user experience and loss in productivity.
This is where eG Enterprise Microsoft SCOM Universal Management Pack comes in. View this presentation to see how to escape siloed monitoring and leverage your SCOM environment to gain real-time insight into every factor that affects your end users’ experience, across your entire infrastructure.

Therefore, it is important that you take the time to design an appropriate hypervisor infrastructure (XenServer, Hyper-V or vSphere). Otherwise, you may experience performance, functionality or even reliability issues.
Most information required to design a XenDesktop deployment on your chosen hypervisor platform is available publicly, but it can be hard to find since it’s spread across a multitude of knowledge base articles or white papers. In order to simplify and speed-up the design process, we’re in the process of consolidating the information that you need into a single document and augmenting it with recommendations and best practices. We’ve just finished incorporating the Hyper-V 2008 R2 and SCVMM 2012 planning section into the latest release of the Citrix Virtual Desktop Handbook, which includes important design decisions relating to this hypervisor, for example:
Selecting and sizing the right physical hardware for virtual machines
Knowing what storage options available for Hyper-V 2008 R2
What type of networks to build on the Hyper-V host
How to size the SCVMM servers
Designing a highly available SCVMM solution
Planning an effective failover cluster
The products covered in this current release of the handbook include XenDesktop 5.6, XenApp 6.5, Provisioning Services 6.x and XenClient Enterprise 4.5. A version of the Virtual Desktop Handbook covering XenDesktop 7.x, Provisioning Services 7, Hyper V 2012 R2 and SCVMM 2012 R2 is in the works with an initial release scheduled later in Q4. As always your feedback is welcomed.

historical trending.
Types of questions answered by EdgeSight Performance Management include:
• What has been the load on my published application servers over the past
month compared to the previous month?
• What is the effect of the number of logged on users to the logon duration for
these users?
• Have I had machine registration errors every Monday? What has been the past
health trend?
• What is the number of peak sessions over the past 24 hours, week, month, year?

EdgeSight network analytics
EdgeSight enables administrators to gain deep, real-time visibility into Citrix
protocol from within the Director console. By understanding the impact of network
latency and bandwidth on the performance of virtual desktops and applications,
IT can more easily discover problems in the environment that may be affecting the
end-user experience. Available for XenDesktop Platinum Edition customers who
have implemented Citrix NetScaler Enterprise or Platinum.
Types of questions answered by EdgeSight network analytics include:
• For a given XenDesktop user, what is the average client and server-side latency
and jitter they are experiencing?
• Which XenDesktop users are consuming the most bandwidth over a given time
period, such as daily, weekly or monthly?
• Which virtual channels are consuming the most bandwidth over a given
time period?
• What are the top applications across all XenApp users, by up-time and total
number of launches over a given time period?
Customer benefits
Director and EdgeSight help customers address key priorities for their virtualized
Citrix environments.
Improved IT productivity reduces time to resolution. Level 1 helpdesk staff can
use an intuitive dashboard to more quickly identify where user issues originate,
and whether the problem is in the network, the virtualized app or the virtual
desktop. An actionable troubleshooting interface helps resolve the problem
effectively without the need for elevation to Level 2.
Real-time environment monitoring provides Level 2 staff with at-a-glance
insight into the health and capacity of the environment. A baseline of the
customer’s environment is captured automatically to help track long-term
performance and capacity trends. As a result, IT can more accurately define and
maintain service-level agreements.
User experience monitoring helps IT understand the impact on configuration
changes and other actions on users through End User Experience Monitoring (EUEM),
a monitoring service that gathers and stores information on operational events.
Performance management based on the historical trending of health and
performance data helps IT maintain optimal performance throughout the
virtualized environment.
Capacity assurance is facilitated through detailed information on current usage
within the environment. IT can more accurately map usage to capacity to better
determine future capacity requirements.
