People with diabetes have a high risk of oral health problems because their poorly controlled blood sugar levels can cause gum infections, fungal infections, delayed healing of infections, and dry mouth. Proper dental hygiene is important for diabetics, including brushing teeth twice daily, cleaning dentures daily and not sleeping with them, avoiding smoking, cleaning teeth and gums daily and visiting the dentist twice a week, flossing once a day to prevent plaque buildup, controlling blood glucose levels, and looking for early signs of gum disease. Maintaining good oral health is important for managing diabetes.
