Pluto is a dwarf planet located in the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune populated with small icy objects. While Pluto meets two of the three criteria to be considered a planet by orbiting the sun and having sufficient mass to be rounded, it has not cleared its orbit of other objects. Its highly elliptical orbit crosses Neptune's orbit and takes 248 Earth years to revolve around the sun. The Kuiper Belt contains remnants of unformed planets and extends past Neptune out to the distant Oort Cloud, which contains trillions of icy comets nearly a million times farther from Earth.
