An ecosystem is formed by the interaction of living organisms with each other and their environment. It contains biotic components like plants and animals, and abiotic components from the non-living environment like temperature, water, soil and light intensity. Producers like plants are the basic food source, while consumers feed on producers or other organisms and are divided into primary, secondary and tertiary consumers depending on their trophic level. Different abiotic factors influence the types of organisms present and their distribution in an ecosystem.

3. What is an ecosystem? Ecosystem is a system formed by the interaction of living organisms with one another and with their environment. ECOSYSTEM ABIOTIC BIOTIC pH value Temperature Light intensity Humidity Topography Microclimate Decomposers Consumers Producers DYNAMIC ECOSYSTEMS
4. ECOSYSTEM Abiotic components The non- living components in the ecosystem such as air, water, soil, temperature and light intensity. Biotic components The living components in the ecosystem such as plants and animals.
6. pH Most organism live in natural and nearly neutral environmental (pH 6 – pH 7.5). Some plants, like maize, grows well in an acidic condition while coconuts grow well in alkaline condition.
7. Temperature Effect on biochemical reaction in the organism. Organism can live within certain range of temperature. Poikilotherms – are animal that cannot control their body temperature. Homoiotherms – are animal that able to maintain their body temperature.
8. Light Intensity Effect the rate of photosynthesis. The distribution of green plants will be more extensive in the area eith higher light intensity.
9. Humidity Organism that can control the rate of water loss have and extensive distribution. Organism such as frogs, snails, earthworm and moss cannot control the rate of water loss and more suited to live in damp places.
10. Topography Altitude – There are less organism at high altitude because of temperature, humidity and air pressure are low. Gradient / Slope
11. Microclimate Microclimate refers to the climate of specific region in an habitat. Microclimate includes light intensity, amount of rainfall, temperature changes and humidity of a microhabitat.
14. Consumers An organism that feed on plants or other organism. Consumers divide into : primary consumers – herbivors that feed on plants directly. Secondary consumers – carnivores that feed on primary consumers directly. Tertiary consumers – carnivores or omnivores that feed on secondary consumer.
