Exploring the Use of Web 2.0 in
       Your Class in 2012
             AGQTP Program 2011:
Leveraging Web 2.0 for Authentic Learning

Web 2.0 Overview
What is Web 2.0?

The internet as you and I know it, used to its full
potential to:

       Connect
       Communicate
       Collaborate
       Create
Why use Web 2.0 in education?

 A tool-set for enhancing pedagogy:
   Differentiated curriculum
   Scaffolding and encouraging higher-order thinking
   Developing students as ‘independent learners’
Enquiry learning and student as teacher/learner
   Collaborative learning
   Engagement and active participation
Access to resources beyond the time/space of the
   traditional classroom
Why use Web 2.0 in education?

 Real-world relevance:
   Authentic audience
Connected and collaborative learning beyond the classroom
   Reflects today’s digital society
Supports development of skills for a “knowledge economy”
Promotes digital literacy and awareness (digital
footprint, cyber safety, critical reading, etc)
Supports development of skills, attitudes and values for
empowerment in 21st century digital world
Our Students’ Future

       “Increasingly, technology skills are also
critical to success in almost every arena, and those
who are more facile with technology will advance
while those without access or skills will not.”

                                 NMC Horizon Report: 2011 K-12 Edition, p. 4.
Our Students’ Future

“learning to collaborate with others and
connect through technology are essential skills
      in a knowledge based economy.”

                           2011 Telstra Whitepaper on Education, p. 16.
It’s Not About the Tools

Web 2.0 in education best practice:
Establishes a class online space as an extension of the
  existing classroom.
Maximises time available for active teaching and student
thinking and discussion during class time.
Applies technology based on pedagogical principles.
Uses Web 2.0 to promote higher order
  thinking, engagement, relevance, real-world
connection, enhance teaching and learning, foster digital
  literacy.
Begins with small steps that are well planned and
purposeful, followed by reflection and consolidation.
Our AGQTP Web 2.0
   Project in 2011
Our Project

12 staff on 3 campuses
After school and full-day workshops
Explored the use of Web 2.0 technologies in the
classroom to enhance learning
Pedagogical basis
Individual and small-group learning and
skilling, followed by applications in the classroom
Varied classroom applications based on
confidence, competence, curriculum, class, etc.
What we did...

1. Set up a “smart online space” (a website to act as the online
home for the class) using Edmodo.

2. Introduced the class to the space, its purpose and how to use it
(including guidelines for conduct, privacy, etc).

3. Began using the online space as an extension of the classroom
     (homework reminders, handouts, embedded
videos, assignments, sharing resources, class activities, student
collaboration, continuing discussions about topics outside the
     classroom, etc).

4. Some participants used this space as the starting point for
incorporation of other educational Web 2.0 tools.
AGQTP Participant Projects

Some Inspiration:
Use of Edmodo as a platform for various classroom and
homework activities
Online presentation of student work (individually and in groups)
for authentic global audiences
Use of mind-mapping tools to make thinking visible
Collaborative brainstorming tools
Use of RSS feeds as an efficient learning resource
Class blog project on a specific theme

Our Experience

Varied levels of competence and confidence
Technical challenges
Reinforced effective pedagogy and reflection about what
that is
All participants found that participation was a valuable
experience for themselves and their students
Enhanced communication between teacher and students
and amongst students
Helped make class activities and projects more real, rich
and relevant for students

Editor's Notes

  1. This presentation has two equally important purposes:To share and fill you in on what participants in last year’s AGQTP Web 2.0 Project achieved with their students, As a follow-on from that to encourage you to explore the use of Web 2.0 in your own class. The Program participants have set as a goal for this year to share their experiences and skills with you by making themselves available as mentors so that other teachers and their students can benefit too. This presentation is really the beginning of that with the hope of inspiring you by sharing a little of our experiences and what we see as the benefits of Web 2.0.I have quite a bit to cover, so I’ll ask you to hold questions until the end where I’ve allowed time for that. As any questions occur to you please make a note of them on your handout for a discussion at the end. In addition you can discuss any questions you may have with any of the AGQTP participants or email me. Can I ask the staff who were involved in the Program last year to stand briefly? With a lot to cover, I will move fairly quickly through the slides but I’m confident you’ll follow the main points. Further to that, I encourage you to note the link above and visit it at your leisure where you’ll have access to all the material shared today – including the two presentations I’ll show. As a reminder I’ll email you this link later today. So let’s begin…

  3. So we’re into the second part of this presentation now, and that’s to give you an overview of Edmodo itself. I should point out that there isn’t time to explain all the ins and outs and especially how-tos today. My goal is to entice and inspire you with the potential benefits of using Edmodo with your classes, so I’m going to give a general overview of the layout and features. If you want to find out more after that then I encourage you to catch up with one of the AGQTP people from your campus, or email me, or explore the resources at the two addresses above. The top one is Edmodo’s official help site and it has loads of getting-started support and resources for teachers new to Edmodo. The second link is to a page with 60-90sec video tutorials I have created myself, each covering one action.I want to point out that while I’ll be sharing quite a lot of features, the purpose of that is to fill you in on what Edmodo offers. As a new teacher and class with Edmodo, like with anything else, you would start small and not use all of these at the outset. I encourage you to treat Edmodo like a pass-the-parcel – unravel it slowly, layer by layer. The only difference is that you know ahead of time all the features available. Consider what will enhance teaching and learning for you and your students most and focus on that first. To give the overview I’ll just switch to a second presentation…
