Figure of Speech
• A figure of speech is a word or phrase that
has a meaning something different than its
literal meaning. It is used to add color to the
language.
Simile
Metaphor
Personification
Hyperbole
Exercise1.Analyze the following sentences and
determine if it is simile, metaphor,
personification or hyperbole.
1. I’ve told you a hundred times.
2. He is an ogre.
3. The flowers danced.
4. As wise as an owl.

• A figure of speech is a word or phrase that has a meaning
something different than its literal meaning. It is used to
add color to the language.
• Simile
A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with
another thing of a different kind, used to make a description
more emphatic or vivid. It uses the word as or like.
Example:
Emerald is as green as grass.
• Metaphor
It is a figure of speech that compares two unlike
objects directly. It doesn’t use the word like or as.
Example:
Life is a broken winged bird.
• Personification
It is a figure of speech that is giving life to
inanimate objects.
Example:
1. The flowers danced.
• Hyperbole
• It is an exaggerated statement or claims not
meant to be taken literally.
• Example:
• A river full of gravy
