FOOD SECURITY IN INDIA Food is as essential for living as air is for breathing
Food Security: means something more than getting two square meals. Food Security has three aspects/dimensions. Availability of food:   Means food production within the country,Food imports and the previous years stock stored in govt  granaries. Accessibility of food: means food is within reach of every person. Affordability of food: implies that an individual has enough money to buy sufficient,safe and nutritious food to meet one’s dietary needs.
When the poor households are more vulnerable to food insecurity?   Whenever there is a problem of production At the time of distribution of food crops. Food security depends on the Public Distribution System Govt Vigilance and Action at times when this security is threatened.
The 1995 World Food Summit declared 'Food  security at the individual, household,regional,national,and global levels exists when all people,at all times,have sufficient and safe nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life’. Who are food – insecure?
A large section of people suffer from food and nutrition insecurity in India. The worst affected groups are: Landless people Traditional artisans Petty self employed workers Providers of traditional services . In the urban areas: Ill-paid occupations Casual labour market
Thus,Food Security is ensured in a country only if: 1.Enough food  is available for all the persons, 2.All persons have the capacity to buy food of acceptable quality and  3.There is no barrier to access to food.
Why Food Security? The poorest section of the society might be insecure most of the time, Persons might be food insecure when the country faces a national disaster/calamity and failure of crops etc . During Calamity: Production of food grains decreases. The prices goes up People cannot afford to buy food. If it persists over a longer time period it may cause a situation of starvation, A massive starvation might take a turn of FAMINE.
Natural Calamity Famine is characterized by wide spread deaths due to starvation and epidemics. The most devastating famine that occurred in India was the  FAMINE OF BENGAL  in 1943.This famine killed 30 lakh people in the province of Bengal. Places like Kalahandi and Kashipur ,Barat in Rajasthan Palamau in Jharkhand starvation deaths have been reported.

In the 1970s, food security was understood as the “availability at all times of adequate supply of basic foodstuffs”.(UN,1975) Amartya Sen added a new dimension to food security and emphasized the “access to food through what he called ‘entitlements’—a combination of what one can produce,exchange in the market along with the state or other socially provided supplies. FOOD SECURITY IS NEEDED IN A COUNTRY TO ENSURE FOOD AT ALL TIMES
India is aiming at Self sufficiency in food grains   Green Revolution Buffer Stock Public Distribution System Introduction of Rationing Integrated child development services Food for work  Mid-Day meals
CURRENT STATUS OF PDS It revised in 2000, Two special scheme were launched: ANTYODAYA ANNA YOJANA ANNAPURNA SCHEME WITH SPCIAL TARGET GROUPS OF ‘POOREST OF THE POOR’
