Gaetan Dugas Strategy Template
 I do not intend to present a strategy to spread
HIV, but to learn from Gaetan Dugas case study
 Guiding Principle: Any viral campaign needs a
good virus, humans who will carry, an easy
medium to give to others and a perfect
environment for the medium
 Product is good or bad is not discussed here
(AIDS for users is bad, in this case)
 My aim is just to present a template which can
help you draft a viral strategy for your product
PLEASE NOTE
 HIV is easily communicable
The virus
 Sex is addictive and core to life. People will and
always keep doing sex.
 Person carrying HIV will also have sex with
another not infected person. HIV will pass on
like this.
The medium
 Sex addicts
 Night bar frequenters
 Drug addicts (lets discuss this as different
medium if sex does not work out)
Most effected humans
 Requires where sex is easy, cool and available
 Humans are energetic
The environment
 Initial seed has to be injected (literally) among
initial adopters
 Best is to mix with drugs
The seeding agent
 There is a guy named Gaetan Dugas, a
handsome blond steward for Air Canada, who
used to survey the men on offer in gay bars and
announce with satisfaction, "I'm the prettiest
one." To most, he is unresistible
 Gaetan Dugas can seed this to other males who
carry a high probability to seed to females too
Patient Zero
 Go, sell him our drug
 Incentivize him for the virus
 Boy likes sweet, add sugar to the drug
Seeding strategy
 I * CR = K, where I = invitations, CR = invitation
conversion rate and K = viral coefficient
 For success K > 1
Success Metrics
 Find Gaetan Dugas among current users
 Find a Gaetan Dugas in a different community
Seeding succeeded
 Go back to the medium slide unless you want
to change the virus itself
