 Presented Isabella a sailing project to find a route to the Indies.  Isabella funded his trip.  He discovered America.  Brought wealth to Spain.  Start to the Spanish Empire.
 Spain's Jews were ordered to convert to Catholicism or face expulsion from Spanish territories.  Shortly after, Muslims were also expelled under the same conditions.
 Most powerful nation in Europe.  Expansion  CentralAmerica  South America
 Invincible Armada  Several revolts  Decline of Spanish power in Europe.
 Rise of taxes caused revolts.  Spain’s treasury kept declining.
 Portugal became independent from Spain.  Spanish Portuguese War
 First Succession War  England and Spain
 Death of King Charles II.  End of dynasty of the Habsburgs.  Coming of the Bourbons.
 Treaty of Utrecht  Seriesof treaties between Spain and other European powers.  Ended the Succession War.
 Spanish-American War  Brief war with United States.
 Treaty of Paris  Ended the Spanish- American War.  Spain surrendering control of Cuba.  Ceding Puerto Rico.
 Spain and France were no longer enemies  Invaded Portugal together.
 Invasion did not go as planned.  Napoleon secretly stationed troops in Spain and began to occupy.
 Liberal government was established in next few years.  Only lasted 3 years until the Monarchy was restored.
 The First Carlist War  Fought over succession of the throne.
 The Second Carlist War  Fought to facilitate the marriage of Isabella and Carlos.
 Battle of Annual  Fought between Spain and Morocco.  Big Defeat
 The Spanish Civil War  Foughtbetween the Nationalists and the Republicans. Video
 The Rebels Won  Led by General Franco  He established a totalitarian government.  Ended upon his death in 1975.
 After Death of Franco, Spanish people made a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.  Know as “The Spanish Model”
