3 STEPS TO A PHONE INTERVIEW Preparation Interviewing Post Interview
Preparation You select the best: Day -  earlier or Later… It’s up to you Time -  If they want to speak to you, they  will wait Room -  You should be sitting  not   standing Phone  you wish to use Conduct interviews  only  from a Land Line With “ Call Waiting ” turned “ OFF ”
Preparation Continued Dress  - as you would for a face to face interview (business suit) Relax  - give yourself plenty of time Exercise your voice muscles talk to someone on the phone an hour before the interview also suck on a mint before the interview
Preparation Continued Remember - this is an “ Open Book Test ” so have in front of you: Your Resume’ Questions for the interviewer Your 30 second intro or 1:30 script, and a list of your accomplishments Company description, facts and recent news Answer to  “Why Should I Hire You?” The Job Description
Preparation Continued Ready your space: Clean off all distractions (Pictures, Trophies, Certificates etc.) Turn off your FAX machine Have paper and pen ready Any company research A glass of water Prepared questions
Preparation Continued Get a picture (from “LinkedIN” of the person that will be interviewing you, blow it up, print it and have it in front of you. Talk to the picture as you answer questions. Listen and learn from “Talk Radio” or Politicians to see how they answer questions.
Preparation Continued Remove all background noise Don’t “Multi-Task”  STAY FOCUSED! Have etiquette – answer the phone and say  “Hello” Attitude is key –  STAY POSITIVE  and  ENERGETIC Act as if the person interviewing you  is in  the room and you are facing them Relax and  HAVE FUN!  – It will come across on the phone!
Interviewing Pick-up the phone on the 2nd or 3rd ring  on the 1st ring shows you are too anxious  on the 4th ring or later – shows you are not interested Start with the  “Phone Hand Shake”   some small talk to schmooze   no more than 60 seconds! Set the tone of the phone interview – you set the pace
Interviewing Continued Breath produces voice: Deep Controlled  Natural Remove “Non-words” the “Ums”, “Ahs”, and “You Knows” from the conversation… no more than 5 in 60 minutes… Join Toastmasters LISTEN CAREFULLY  – Read between the lines
Interviewing Continued Take Notes  what was I asked, what did I answer Get to the point – speak in a few words Use  “Vivid Descriptive ” words Vary your voice tone – use pauses for emphasis Keep your voice – pleasant, natural, dynamic, expressive, and easily heard
Interviewing Continued Ask   “Knockout”   Questions… This is where   your homework on the company and your notes pay off. Ask for the interviewer’s E-Mail address Use phrases effectively –   NO PERIODS OF DEAD AIR
Interviewing Continued Say how you feel I am excited about the opportunity….. I am passionate about the industry….. I am energized hearing about a company that……. Tell the interviewer that –  YOU WANT THE JOB Thank the interviewer at the end of the conversation Ask  “What are the next steps?”
Post Interview Send the interviewer a   “Thank You”   E-mail Reinforce your attributes Skills  Value you bring to the organization Send the interviewer a  “Thank You”  hand written note – short and to the point
Post Interview Continued Conduct a self analysis: What went well What did not go well What you would have done differently If you have additional questions ask them in the follow-up “Thank You” E-mail Get ready for the next phone interview Practice! , Practice!!,  Practice!!!
