1. Which are the most conscious
nations on the planet?
2. What is the worldview of your
nation?
3. What is your worldview?
STAGES, LEVELS
AND WORLD VIEWS
Every human being grows in
stages of psychological
development, operates at levels
of consciousness and lives inside
a worldview which reflects the
stage of collective psychological
development that the
community/nation they were
born into (and live in) has
reached.
* All cosmologies are transcendent except the “scientific” cosmology.

Moment-to-

We can divide our human belief systems into
three types. Each belief system applies to a
particular context of our lives and covers a
particular time frame.
A cosmology
A cultural belief system
A personal belief system
Our three belief
systems, taken
together, constitute
what is known as
our worldview.
WORLDVIEW
Personal
beliefs
Cosmological
beliefs
Cultural
beliefs
A worldview is a set of
lenses (beliefs) which we
use to interpret what is
happening in the world
around us and how we
believe we should respond
in order to get our needs
met. In other words, we
use our worldview for
meaning-making and
decision-making.
WORLDVIEW
Personal
beliefs
Cosmological
beliefs
Cultural
beliefs
Our worldviews include aspects of all three of our belief
systems. We normally use the belief system which is
most pertinent to the situation we are experiencing to
interpret and respond to what is happening.
For example, if
someone we are
close to dies, we
will turn to our
cosmological
belief system
If we have to vote
in an election, we
will turn to our
cultural belief
system
If we are in a
difficult relationship,
we will turn to our
personal belief
system

If their personal belief system is dominant,
they will tend to interpret everything that is
happening to them through a personal lens—
they will take everything personally.

If their cosmological belief system is
dominant, they will tend interpret everything
that is happening to them through a religious,
spiritual or scientific lens—they will seek to
find a deeper meaning to what is happening.
CULTURAL
BELIEF SYSTEM
If their cultural beliefs system is dominant,
they will tend to interpret everything that is
happening to them through a socio-political
lens—they will evaluate the impact of what is
happening on how it affects their community.

Survival
The reason your worldview becomes dominated by your
personal belief system is because your fears about not
having enough to survive (or being abandoned), not
being loved enough to feel safe, and not be recognized or
respected enough to feel secure, become “hard-wired”
into your mind/brain while it is growing and developing.

A worldview is a
set of beliefs which enables
us to interpret (give meaning
to) what is happening in the
world around us. Based on
the meaning we give, we
make a decision which we
believe will enable us to get
our needs met within the
physical and cultural
framework of our
existence.

The worldviews
that people use to
interpret what is
happening to them
are determined by
their sense of

Survival through sharing and reciprocity
1. CLAN AWARENESS
❖ People live in small family groups and survive by
hunting and gathering.
❖ They regard their physical environment as their
home. The Earth is their “mother”, the world they
live in is their “classroom” and nature is their
“teacher”.
Discover what truly matters.
www.valuescentre.com
❖ Men and women participate equally in making decisions.
There is a common understanding about the spheres of
activity of men and women.
❖ There are no formal rules. There are common
understandings about how people should be treated.
Behaviours are controlled through social pressure.
1. CLAN AWARENESS
Survival through sharing and reciprocity
The Aboriginal people of Australia, people
living in the remote parts of the Amazon
basin and also in Papua New Guinea.
Clan Awareness can still be found in:
when nomadic hunter/gatherers
settled in one place and started
horticulture and farming. The
plentiful supply of food caused
clans to expand into tribes.

2. TRIBE AWARENESS
❖ Blood ties and family, together with loyalty and
conforming (to the rules of the tribe), are extremely
important.
❖ Many aspects of this worldview show up in our modern
world in the form of dress codes, rituals, superstitions,
sports teams and family run businesses.

Safety through belonging and loyalty
❖ Men and women participate in decision-making.
❖ What belongs to you belongs to the “family.”
❖ Suppression of ego expression.
❖ Separation shows up in the form of ethnic identity and
territoriality.
2. TRIBE AWARENESS
Most of the nations of Sub-Saharan Africa,
the Indigenous groups of North and South
America and in the Caribbean Islands
The worldview of Tribe Awareness
can still be found as a strong subculture in:
when tribes expanded—
created towns and cities—
and started competing for
resources and territories.

3. STATE AWARENESS
❖ This worldview represents male domination.
❖ Women are not respected. They tend to be treated as sexual
objects. Homophobia is rampant. LGBT not tolerated.
❖ Leaders operating from State Awareness will lie, cheat and
manipulate to get what they want.

www.valuescentre.com
Security through power and strength
❖ Leaders often have a series of “trophy” wives to whom they
are seldom faithful. They take pride in displays of military
strength and physical and sexual accomplishment.
❖ This is the worldview of dictators and all those who use fear
to manipulate others to gain power—mafia, drug lords,
unscrupulous politicians.

found in nations that are strongly religious.
❖ Strict laws, rules and codes of conduct are established based
on moral authority (usually monotheistic religions).
❖ Elites dominate. Citizens are divided into upper, middle and
lower classes. Women are regarded as second-class citizens
with very few rights.

ultimate authority. There is only one right way.
❖ Leaders influence and meddle with the affairs of state and

❖ In worldview of World Awareness governance structures are
much more democratic and women, although still
discriminated against, have more control over their lives.
❖ Religious and ethnic diversity are much more acceptable.
Science takes over from religion as the new cosmology.
❖ The rich and powerful try to influence political decision-
making through bribery and corruption.

❖ The poor and the disadvantaged, as well as the

paramount.
❖ The gap between the rich and poor grows wider
(inequality) because those with wealth invest their
money at interest rates that are higher than the rate
of increase of incomes.

In the Spring of 2017
I decided to explore

I created the GCI for nations
by identifying two or three
