1. Introduction ITC limited is one of India’s foremost private companies with a market capitalization of approx. INR 70000 crores and annual turn over of over INR 16224 crores. ITC has diversified presence in Cigarettes, Hotels, Paperboards and speciality papers, Packaging, Agribusiness, Branded apparel, Packaged foods and confectionery, Greeting cards, Stationary and other Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) products. 2. Objectives of the study 1. To know the sources of raw materials of cigarette manufacturing.        2. To know various types raw materials used in cigarette manufacturing. 3. To know various processes of cigarette manufacturing. 4. To find various types of wastes generates in this factory. 5. To know various impacts of these wastes on Environment and Health. 6. To know the management of these wastes. 7. To evaluate other possible waste management techniques.
3. Concept of Environment, Health & Safety Environment can be defined as “the life supporting system that surrounds every living organisms.” Health can be defined as the “Metabolic efficiency” Safety can be defined as “ Being far from any adverse event for the health, society, environment”
4. Cigarette manufacturing process & waste generation a) By Cigarette manufacturing machine (LOGA)
Wastes from LOGA Cut tobacco Tobacco dust Cigarette paper Filter PCT (Paper Cork Tip) Gum Winnowing
b) By Packing machine (FOCKE)
Waste from FOCKE Waste cigarette Blank Inner frame Aluminum foil/ Metalized Paper Gum Tobacco Dust
c) By Wrapping machine
Waste from wrapping machine Waste cigarette Blank Inner frame Aluminum foil BOPP TOR C ore
d) By Gay wrapping machine
Waste from gay wrapping Wrapping paper(Gay Wrapper) Core Gum
E) By Final packing
Waste from final packaging Gum Tape waste
5. Wastes generates from various sectors ·       Waste from roulette area ·       Waste from Secondary Manufacturing Department ·       Waste from Canteen ·       Waste from garden ·       Waste from office buildings . Waste from slide making area . Waste from ambulance room
6. Environmental risks due to various wastes All types of tobacco waste creates air, water and land pollution Dumping of wastes cause bad smell, increasing of pests, insects, help various diseases to break out & also causes site pollution. Dumping of non-biodegradable wastes on land reduce its fertility .
4. Oil & grease, Discarded medicines can pollute ground water level as it present near the ground surface. 5 . Dumping of non-biodegradable waste reduces the fertility of the soil.
7. Health risks due to various waste Tobacco dust from roulette are, manufacturing area, DRF plant etc. can cause allergy, fever & respiratory problems. Continuous exposure to noise can damage the hearing system, and also cause the nerve problem, depression, headache etc.
3. Vibration of the manufacturing machines can cause various problems. White finger is common among workers who use vibrating drills . 4. Dumping of waste may cause various diseases to peoples.
   8. Waste Management by the factory WMS waste, Plastic rope, Packaging, paper etc. Collection Storage Sold to vendors Recycling
Tobacco Reuse Of the usable Tobacco from the SMD area Tobacco dust From DRF plant Collected in bags Water damaged Tobacco stored In the dustbins Stored for Selling to vendors Stored for selling to vendors Recycling
Canteen wastes Liquid waste (washing water, oil & grease etc. ) Solid waste Food, scraps, vegetables etc Plastics, paper & Other cover & packages Discharged into Drains after Removing O & G Food wastes stored in Container, scraps & Vegetable waste stored in Dustbins for selling Stored for selling To vendors Used to feed animals, Manure manufacture etc. Recycling of plastic, paper etc.
9.    Alternative waste management process. Bio-degradation of Nicotine by a newly isolated Agrobacterium Sp. Strain S 33, Bacillus and lactobacillus Sp. Enzymatic production of Glucose from waste paper. Glucose thereafter can be utilized for production of ethanol and other chemicals by specific microbial cultures. Tobacco wastes can be used as fertilizer for improving yields and nutritional value of tomato & Lettuce ( Lactuca sativa ).
4. Production of Caffeic Acid (CA) from the Caffeoylquinic Acid (CQAs) of tobacco. Caffeic Acid is widely applied in food and pharmaceutical industries. 5. Vermicomposting of Bio-degradable waste produces a better quality fertilizer. 6. Biogas & Bio-diesel production from the biodegradable waste is possible. 7. Electricity production from the garbage is now possible.
Thank You
