Instagram is a photo-sharing social media app that allows users to take photos, add filters and share with followers. It quickly grew in popularity after its 2010 release. Users can now also share short videos. Popular hashtags include #selfie and #nofilter. Users can choose filters to enhance photos and like or comment on other users' posts. Businesses can use Instagram to showcase products, celebrate events, and run contests to engage customers.

Instagram is a photo-sharing social media app that allows users to take and upload photos from their smartphone camera, add filters, captions and location info and then share them with "followers." Walden Pond 2015
On its release in 2010, Instagram was initially an outlet for creative types and trendsetters wanting to post pics. But it quickly exploded in popularity to become one of the leading social media apps for iPhone and Android, and was purchased by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion.
And, as of recently, users can share up to 15 seconds of video with their followers as well as photos.
Posts containing #selfie has grown to 212,608,868 posts! Siam Paragon Mall in Bangkok, Thailand is the most geotagged place on Instagram; Times Square, NYC is a close 2nd. Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) is the most followed person on Instagram. Top 10 Hashtags (as of October 2015): #fashon, #friends, #smile, #like4like, #instamood, #family, #nofilter, #amazing, #style and #sun
You have the option of taking a new photo using Instagram’s in-app camera feature, or can upload a shot you've prepared earlier from your camera roll or photo gallery. How Does It Work?
Then, choose from one of 19 filters to enhance your photo – everything from sepia and black and white tones, to vintage-looking borders and frames. Filters
Hit ‘Like’ (or double tap) to show you approve of a photo, or ‘Comment’ if you've got something to say. You can address comments directly to other users by typing @ followed by their username. Engagement

Finding People You Know Instagram can help you find and follow your Facebook friends and phone contacts who are already on Instagram.
Finding Other Users Find other users through the Explore tab. “Discover New People” to see accounts that you might like, based on your preferences. “Explore Posts” to see images that a large number of Instagram users have liked.
Finding Your Interests You can find people by their name or their Instagram username. To find certain subjects, trends and interests, you can also do hashtag searches.

Is It Safe? Although your Instagram account will be public by default – meaning any other user can see your photos and subscribe to your posts – you have the option of changing it to private.
Should I Use It For My Business? Instagram isn't only for businesses with visually appealing products or big brands. ANY business, small/big, unsexy/cool, should consider using it.
