SNMP is a set of protocols for managing network devices. It uses a manager-agent model where a manager controls and monitors agents, usually routers. SNMP relies on SMI to define object naming and types and MIB to create a collection of named objects and their relationships. Objects are given OIDs starting with 1.3.6.1.2. SNMP versions 1 and 2c provide limited security while version 3 adds authentication and encryption. SNMP uses community strings for authentication in versions 1 and 2c and username/password in version 3. Common packet types include get, set, and trap requests.

2. What is SNMP?
● It is a set of several protocol definitions
for managing networks.
● SNMP uses the concept of manager and
agent , which means a manager controls
and monitors a set of agents (usually
routers).

3. SNMP uses two other protocols :
1.Structure of Management Information
(SMI):
SMI defines the general rules for
naming objects, defining object types +
(range,length), and showing how to
encode objects and values.

4. 2.Management Information Base (MIB):
MIB creates a collection of named objects,
their types, and their relationships to each
other in an entity to be managed.

5. ● Object Identifier (OID):
OID is use by SMI to name or idetify an
object based on tree structure.
● All objects managed by SNMP is given
an OID.
● In SNMP all OIDs starts with 1.3.6.1.2.1

7. SNMP Version 1, 2c and 3
● SNMP Version 1: The oldest and most
basic version of SNMP.
● simple to set up , but have limited
security & only supports 32bit counters.

8. ● SNMP Version 2c: the same but support
64bit counter to monitor bandwidth
usage in networks with gigabits/second
loads.
● SNMP Version 3: Adds authentication and
encryption.

9. What is the “SNMP Community
String”?
● The “SNMP Community string” is like a
user id or password that allows access to
a router or other device's statistics.
● It is used just in v1 and v2c.
● SNMPv3 uses username/password
authentication, along with an encryption
key.
