Editor's Notes

  1. Apps are not dead; instead, they are becoming intelligent Apple’s Core ML is an impressive, even if admittedly limited, step toward this “machine learning inside everything” future Core ML is Apple's venture into the world of artificial intelligence. It’s a framework for developers to easily integrate machine learning models (both self-made and those of third parties) into iOS Apps, and forms the backbone of a number of Apple's iOS 11 additions, including the new Siri features and AR Kit. Apple’s led by example on the AI front by baking machine learning in their system apps such as Apple News and the camera QR code reader. Overall, the competition with Google Android is now focused on making it easier and faster for developers and brands to develop intelligent apps, taking advantage of artificial intelligence, machine learning, language and vision capabilities. This means that Apple is finally taking artificial intelligence seriously. Core ML isn’t revolutionary, but it is, in a quintessentially Apple way, an evolutionary step to make machine learning more accessible. The introduction of Core ML means iOS developers can much more easily apply machine learning in their apps. Given Google’s recent declaration to make the company AI-first, it’s not surprising to also see Apple making strides in the direction of a brave new AI world.
  2. Siri remains the most popular assistant with 41.6 mn MAU, but has lost 15% active users in the same period. Amazon Alexa usage has grown 325% in the last year, reaching 2.6 mn monthly users via mobile. Meanwhile, Google revealed that 100 million devices now have access to Google Assistant, and is now making its Assistant available for iPhone and iPad users, with a new iOS app coming up this year
  3. Smart commerce: personal assitant turn into shopping assistants
  4. Available on Facebook’s native mobile apps, desktop site, and TV apps, Watch lets users subscribe to their favorite series instead of just haphazardly stumbling upon one-off videos in the News Feed. U.S. users will now see the TV icon in the mobile navigation bar and desktop site bookmarks. Meanwhile, Facebook is trying to ensure that user generated videos don’t get taken down for including music owned by the major record labels. Bloomberg reports Facebook is offering the labels hundreds of millions of dollars for a deal that would let infringing videos stay up, rather than be removed to the great annoyance of users.
