- 1. People don’t generally go to the dentist. According to USA Today 64% of people in North Carolina attend the dentist. Dental hygienist usually helps with cleaning of the teeth, diseases, and any possible treatments. More people should attend the dentist, because your teeth are another important part of the body. Like bathing, teeth cleaning are an important habit in our daily lives. “Teeth cleaning is part of oral hygiene and involves the removal of the plaque from teeth while preventing periodontal disease” (teeth). Cleaning your teeth is just another way of keeping yourself healthy. Some people may say you should always take care of your teeth, like you would clean your body; they’re both factors of your hygiene. Brushing and flossing both help to prevent plaque build-up. “Teeth cleaning is a procedure for the removal of tartar that develops even with a careful brushing and flossing method, in areas that are hard to reach in the routine tooth brushing” (teeth). Dentist may say you should clean your teeth through brushing and flossing; but if you don’t clean them you can develop a disease. Several common diseases are tooth decay, gingivitis, and halitosis. “The mixture of saliva and bacteria creates plaque, which grows sugar bacteria acids that dissolve the teeth enamel, resulting in tooth decay” (teeth disease). Waking up in the morning and you notice you have some new friends that live on the side line of your gums that are called plaque. Plaque is at the top of the disease list; plaque is a soft clear coating that collects on the surface of the tooth. Plaque turns into gum disease which is bacteria inside the mouth. “Halitosis is caused by pieces of food that is caught between the teeth, on the gums, and tongue” (teeth disease). When your teeth are not brushed the food starts to degrade and creates a bad smell, which comes from broken down proteins by bacteria inside the mouth. Disease can be turned around through proper treatments.
- 2. More extensive dental treatments involve extraction, crowns, and fillings. When you don’t brush your teeth and eat a lot of sugar and sweets in the process your teeth/tooth will start to produce a cavity. If that cavity continues to go untreated that tooth will develop a hole, which will then need the treatment of a fill-in. “A simple cavity on the surface caused by decay, a dentist will fill the hole with silver metal or white composite material” (1Dental). The filling is covering the cavity making it so the cavity will not grow anymore. “A crown is also a cap; it’s a permanent covering which is glued onto the existing tooth” (1dental). Crowns are normally used if the tooth is badly decayed, chipped, or broken down. If your tooth is so far decayed or broken; the dentist cannot repair it the only other option is to remove the entire tooth. Crowns on the teeth, fillings, and teeth extractions all are common treatments to better your oral hygiene. People should know that brushing your teeth is a big part of the everyday life. When you wake up in the morning, most likely the first thing you would normally do is brush your teeth. Cleaning you teeth is always a good way to start your day off. Not following through with this procedure you may develop diseases, which leads to treatments. Everyone should have more care for their teeth nobody wants to talk to someone with bad breath. Some people may not attend the dentist because the insurance is so high. For an individual per year is about $100, families $160, and that’s not even the half you still have to pay upfront at the desk. “Only 55% of American’s have dental insurance” (health & wealth). People with jobs may have dental coverage with their jobs, and even then it’s not easy. “Even if your employer does have insurance, you typically end up paying about half of your dental cost” (health & wealth). So money will still continue to come out your pocket. “If your company has a dental plan try lobbying your employer to offer a policy where employees bear 100% of the expenses” (health and wealth). Without insurance it’s kind of hard because you will normally
- 3. have to pay the dentist every month, even if you do not attend. People should ask about other payment option that may work around their life and needs. Dental work can be very costly, but it’s important. Without health insurance it’s very difficult to really take care of your teeth the way you normally would. If you have a dental care facility that you attend but it’s very costly, you could talk to your health care provider and see what types of discounts are offered to you, and also your family.
