Focus Area TWO : Hoovervilles and the Urban Experience By Hylkema
Slide 2 : Hooverville the picture This picture shows the tent that a family is living in It also shows a car parked outside Children are playing around There are other cars and tents around and these people are not alone in their plight It looks like just an open field which is unusual because with Hoovervilles you can usually see a city somewhere in the area. On the one hand the picture is depressing because you know these people have lost everything and are living in a tent. At the same time they are trying to continue with their life, playing outside and trying to keep things normal I think the photographers wants us to see how they are forced to live and how they try to keep their humanity
Slide 3 : Hooverville the history As the depression spread more and more people found themselves unemployed and without the money to pay rents and mortgages. Some people had lost everything when the banks failed and no money with which to survive. This forced people to be homeless and to try and find new places to live. These people tended to be the poor and working class. The people just making it were the ones hardest hit by the depression In urban environments the places people ended up were often Hoovervilles. Impoverished people who could not afford food or shelter got sick more easily – the conditions in Hoovervilles were not good Children suffered most from the long-term effects of poor diet and inadequate medical care so people were sick and unhealthy in these places. The car is interesting because it shows a new force in peoples lives. The car made it easier for people to get around. People even ended up living in their cars.
