Shivananda Koteshwar, Director at Mediatek, gave a presentation on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Mediatek's role in the IoT space. The presentation discussed the history of IoT starting from devices like refrigerators and coffee pots being connected to the internet in the 1990s. It covered key elements of IoT like sensors, connectivity, analytics and challenges like energy, security and bandwidth. Examples of IoT applications in various industries were provided along with Mediatek's solution of hardware and software for enabling IoT device development.

History of IoT
! 1990: John Romkey created the first
Internet ‘device’, a toaster that could be
turned on and off over the Internet
! At the October '89 INTEROP conference,
Dan Lynch, President of Interop promised
Romkey that, if Romkey was able to
"bring up his toaster on the Net," the
appliance would be given star placement
in the floor-wide exhibitors at the
conference. The toaster was connected to
a computer with TCP/IP networking. It
then used an information base (SNMP
MIB) to turn the power on.

History of IoT
! 1993: Created by Quentin Stafford-
Fraser and Paul Jardetzky. The
Coffee Pot was located in the
'Trojan Room' within the Computer
Laboratory of the University of
Cambridge
! This was used to monitor the pot
levels with an image being updated
about 3x a minute and sent to the
buildings server. It was later put
online for viewing once browsers
could display images.
