Load and Its Principles in Sports
Dr. Madhuri Sadgir,
Department of Physical Education
Assistant Professor
University of Mumbai
Definition of Load
Load is the process of tackling training and
competition demands which causes temporary
disturbance of psychic and physical state of
homeostasis.
Dr.MadhuriSadgir
Meaning
Load is a process : It is composed of the
phases, sequence, means and modes of
training.
Training demands : It is predetermined
physical and psychological stress
administered during the training period.
Training is given to attend certain
objectives. Accordingly, training output,
exercises, training methods, training
pedagogy, training principles or protocols,
assessment tools and procedure, are
used.
Competitive demands : It is in the form of,
pressure of competition standard,
Performance level of team, opponent
pressure, audience pressure, load
intensity, game duration, and recovery
from exertion
Dr.MadhuriSadgir
Load Features/ Factors
There are four factors of load discussed as below,
1. Movement Quality
2. Types of Exercise
3. Load Intensity
4. Load Volume
Dr.MadhuriSadgir
Movement Quality
1. Movement is base of any game
2. Appropriate movements are important to execute tactical
aspects of the game
3. Degree of difficulty in movements execution is consider for
load administration
Dr.MadhuriSadgir
Types of Exercise
1. General , Specific or competitive
2. They are essential mean of training load
3. Neuromuscular adaptation process for specific exercise
is also a kind of load.
Dr.MadhuriSadgir
Load Intensity
1. Degree of efforts made by the sportsperson while
performing an exercise is considered as load intensity
2. Weight, height, time etc are measures of intensity
3. Intensity divided into two part, load intensity and load
density.
4. To Measure load intensity, one must know the
assessment tools, techniques, and methods, i.e. 1 RM,
Target Heart Rate etc.
Dr.MadhuriSadgir
Load Volume
1. It is a total amount of work, done while performing
exercise.
2. Load Volume is divided into two known as frequency and
duration.
3. Load always administered in proportion between
intensity and volume
Dr.MadhuriSadgir
Principles of Load
1. Principle of Continue Loading
2. Principle of load and adaptation
3. Principle of Proportion between load and recovery
4. Principle of proportion between intensity and volume
5. Principle of Specific load
6. Principle of variety
7. Principle of reversible load
8. Principle of overload
9. Principle of Individual based
