The document discusses the location choices for a group's opening film sequence. They chose to use a house and specifically the corridor, bedroom, kitchen, conservatory, and bathroom. Each area was chosen for qualities like space, lighting, and mood that would suit different scenes in the horror genre opening. The corridor was narrow and dim to set an isolating tone. The bedroom allowed many shots and was feminine like the protagonist. The kitchen's bright lighting provided contrast. The conservatory had flattering lighting for a close-up phone call scene. And the bathroom was spacious enough for the climax, with a mirror for an ending cliffhanger. Overall, the group felt the locations helped create the intended horror atmosphere.
2. Our Group Ideas
• Together as a group we had decided that we were
going to use a house as our final location.
• The different areas of the house which we
decided to use were the
corridor, bedroom, kitchen, conservatory and
bathroom. We specifically chose these areas as
we know we would have a lot of space to work
with as well as be able to produce an opening
sequence with a good setting.
3. Corridor
The corridor was used when
Zoe makes her way up to the
bathroom. We decided to
use this corridor as it was
fairly narrow and the lighting
was reasonably dull;
therefore, setting the scene.
The narrowness and the
dullness of the corridor help
to present the ideas of
isolation and fear, and overall
portray the genre of horror.
4. Bedroom
The bedroom was a key location in
our opening sequence. We chose
to use this specific bedroom as we
knew there was a great amount of
space which would result in the
ability to capture many different
shots and angles in order to make
our opening sequence as interesting as possible. The bedroom is also very
feminine which portrays Zoe’s characteristics and personality. Due to the
room being feminine, the protagonist follows the stereotype of a typical
female teenager.
5. Kitchen
The kitchen was an extremely
important location which we
used in our opening sequence.
We chose this kitchen as the
it was of an appropriate size and
the lighting was bright. The
lighting was the main reason as
to why we chose this specific
kitchen. This is because it is the
complete opposite to the dull
and narrow corridor which was
used later on in the opening
sequence. The bright lighting
connotes happiness which is a
contradiction of horror films as
they are meant to connote
danger, fear and sadness.
6. Conservatory
We decided to use the
conservatory for the scene
where the telephone rings.
We chose this area as the
lighting was exactly how we
wanted it to be. We also liked
this location as the natural
cream walls did not distract
attention from Zoe’s face
during the close up shot
which was used when she
receives a phone call.
7. Bathroom
The bathroom scene is where the most thrilling
events in the opening sequence take place. We
chose to use this bathroom as it is spacious, has
a good layout and the colours in the bathroom
are very neutral with good natural light coming
through. The mirror is also large which was
perfect in creating our opening sequence
ending, which was a cliffhanger.
8. Our Final Thoughts
Overall, as a group we were very pleased with
the locations that we had used throughout our
opening sequence. We felt they were of a good size
and that they all helped to create a horror film
which is exactly what we was hoping for. They were
also based in convenient areas for us all and we
could easily access them.
