The document discusses potential filming locations for scenes in a thriller film around Taverham and Thorpe Marriott. It analyzes photos taken of an urban road, alleyway, woods, open fields, and an abandoned mental asylum that could be used to introduce characters and create a sense of fear through isolated and dark settings. Concerns about filming at night due to lighting are addressed. Maps show the distances between locations being considered.
2. General Locations
Due to where all members of our group live, we have
decided to film around Taverham and Thorpe Marriott,
therefore making filming flexible and practical.
We went on a location scout and returned with 50
photos of locations which could potentially be used in
filming. We proceeded to discuss, rule out and select
different locations. The following presentations will
show some of the locations we found.
3. First Sequence Locations –
Our first scene will introduce the
Urban Road
Detective, The Girl and The Shade. We
want them to be introduced in an
urban area to show that fear and
paranormal can happen on ‘any street’
which gives this scene a terrifying
affect. We also chose to film in urban
streets from the inspirations similar to
Gotham City in Batman films. Due to
the street lights, this gives an eery dark
atmosphere.
We have taken images from both day
and night and are hoping to film
during both day and night. We are
going to do this so that we can see if
we are able to film during the night or
if we have to film at dusk and alter the
brightness during the editing process.
At night time, the shots would work
perfectly with the mysterious street
lights, which is a common piece of
thriller iconography.
4. Alleyway
These two shots will include
the Detective running,
ultimately approaching The
Shade standing at the end. He
will then have a flashback and
turn to run away. This is a
‘possible’ shot, depending on
time restrictions. However it
will definitely be filmed.
We believe that this is a good
location due to narrow to
narrowness of the path itself
and also the high fences. This
can make it seem very
threatening which is of course a
common theme within thrillers.
5. Woods
We are hoping to include two shots
of this track. It is situated at the
bottom of a field (known as ‘The
Green’) and is Marriotts Way.
During these shots we would again
have encounters with the Shade and
flashbacks. The Detectives would
run through this track, featuring
several point of view shots while
running.
The claustrophobic scene of the
woods towering over will create a
brilliantly terrifying effect. This is
similar to the ‘release’ scene in The
Cabin In The Woods, which uses
claustrophobic spaces to create a
sense of terror.
This location also creates an isolated
effect and disorientates the
audience.
6. Possibilities
In the images we can see a different
forested area of Taverham. Despite the
change in location we can still use this
as the audience will be unaware of the
location change so long as the
transitions are smooth and there are no
continuity errors. We really liked the
junction type shots. WE imagine that we
could use this and have The Shade on
one side, and therefore force the
Detective down the other route.
I believe that this is still a possible scene
as on one side of the route you can see a
house, therefore there is a suburban
housing estate on that side. On the other
side, there is wooded area. Joe did not
like this idea, however in The Strangers
which is a popular thriller movie, on
one side of the house there is a housing
estate and on the other is a dark wooded
area.
7. Open Area – Final Scene
We plan to film the final scene
in an open area, such as a field
or The Green. After running for
some time the Detective will
eventually emerge into an open
area where he will be
surrounded and enclosed by
The Shade.
If the weather is overcast and
it’s dark it will crate a very eery
atmosphere but of course this a
an extremely unreliable way of
filming. Therefore we are going
to film to a schedule and edit
the brightness of the scene
during the editing process.
8. Map
This map shows the
distance between each
location we have found.
It must be remembered
that we may not be
filming at every single
location we have found.
9. Other Locations
One location which is not on the
map yet will be used is an
abandoned Mental Asylum in
Thorpe St Andrews.
The shots of this asylum will be
used to create the flashback
scenes so all angles of the
building will be needed.
Despite the remote location, I
am willing to go and obtain
these shots. On the left are a
few shots I took with a still
camera. An inspiration for these
shots is from the film Shutter
Island which features a creepy
Insane Asylum.
