The student learned many new skills from their preliminary magazine task to their final production:
They improved their research and planning skills by viewing real magazines in their genre and choosing appropriate fonts and elements. Their time management improved so they didn't rush their work.
Construction skills like using drop shadows improved. Photographic skills like using auto-focus resulted in higher quality images without blur. The use of layers was more conventional.
Overall there were vast improvements, showing the progression of skills learned throughout the process.
1. Evaluation question 7
Looking back at your preliminarytask (the college magazine task / continuityeditingexercise),
what do you feel youhave learntin the progressionfrom it to your final production?
Research and planning–
Since myprelimcoverI completedclosertothe start of the year, myskillshave improvedmassively.
As we can see fromthe printprelimtaskbelow,Ihave learntmanymore skillsandtechniquesin
creatinga good lookingmagazine.
Throughthe use of my medialessonsIlearntmore aboutthe indie scheme of thingsandmade sure I
was inline withprofessional practice asyouhave a more detailedunderstandingof the formsand
conventionsof real mediaproducts.
In thistaskI viewedmanymagazinesthatfit inwithmygenre,ImainlyusedKerrangmagazinesto
lookoverand see whathad beenusedinthe pastto create a goodlookingindie style magazine. In
the prelimtaskI usedbasicfonts,inmy recentmagazine Iuseddafont.comtodownloadagoodfont
that fitsinwiththe indie nature of the variousmagazinesthatIlookedat.I chose the fontI did on
my recentmagazine throughresearch,the fontonmyprelimisverybasic,althoughIuseda stroke
effect,there isnodropshadowand the textisverybland.
Time managementisabig part of creatinga good endproduct.I had to increase myeffortsforbeing
on time forlessons, givinguptime toput inmore for mymediaworkalso.By havingmore time,it
meansI didn’thave torush thingssocan take more care withthe workgivinga betterendproduct.
I have workedbettertoplan my work.By doinga reasonable amountof researchbeforehand, this
enables me toworkbetterwithbettersourcesanda betterideainmyheadof whatto do.

2. Evaluation question 7
Construction–
There have beenvastimprovementsfrommyprelimtasktothe productI have just completed. One
skill improvementwe cansee ison the mast headof the magazines.Onthe leftismyrecent
product,we can see the use of stroke, dropshadow andcustom fonts;buton the otherhand inthe
firstprelimthe fontisverybasic, althoughstroke isused. The use of dropshadow on the “indym”
magazine makesitlookverymuchmore professional andthe mastheadpopsoutof the screen.
Layers– we can see howmy use of layershasimprovedovertime also.Onthe leftinmyprelimthe

Photography – We see a clear difference inthe qualityof the imagesbetweenbothimages.Inthe
prelimonthe left, the image isactuallyslightlyblurred.Thiscouldbe due tothe limitedskillsIhad
operatingthe camerainthis time.Since then,andinthe secondmagazine,myskillswiththe camera
have vastlyimproved. We cansee the introductionof propsinthe secondmagazine reflectingthe
magazine genre withthe guitar, alsothe modelsclothingreflectingthe indiegenre.
I learnedhowtouse auto focusalso, thismeansthat the image the secondtime roundwasmuch
betterqualitywithnoblur. Ialsolearntthe variouscamera angles, allowingme totake the bestshot
that I thoughtwouldbenefitmymagazine the most.
