What is convergent evolution? • When two species or populations evolve to become more similar to each other. Hint: Evolution of analogous structures is always an example of convergent evolution.
What is divergent evolution? • When two species or populations evolve to become more different from each other Hint: The evolution of homologous structures is always an example of divergent evolution.

What is adaptive radiation? • A special type of divergent evolution • One common ancestor species evolves into many new species. Example: Galapagos finches; one common ancestor evolved into many different new species.
What is extinction? • When every member of a species dies out
What is a mass extinction? • When many species suddenly go extinct • There have been 5 mass extinctions in the history of the Earth • Some people think a 6th mass extinction is happening now, due to human activity.
