Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821 led by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who later became president. In the 1840s, Mexico lost territory in the Mexican-American War and faced internal conflicts between liberals and conservatives. From 1862-1867, France invaded and established the Second Mexican Empire. Porfiro Diaz eventually took control of Mexico in 1876, dominating the country for decades as conservatives and liberals struggled for power.
