Generations of mobile platforms “ Legacy ”  platforms (Symbian, BlackBerry OS, BREW, Windows Mobile) “ Next-generation ”  platforms (iOS, Android, webOS, Windows Phone, Bada) Handset sales are driven not by hardware features ( “ what the handset can do ” ) but the user interface and applications available ( “ what you can do with the handset ” ) Most important:  ecosystem  and  network effect

Battle of App Markets Android Market : 600 000 apps, 10 billion downloads iOS App Store : 500 000 apps, 18 billion downloads BlackBerry App World : 50 000 apps, 1 billion downloads Nokia (Ovi) Store : 50 000 apps Windows Phone Marketplace : 40 000 apps

It was year 2000 Phones were used for calling, SMS and playing Snake Monochrome graphic, monophonic ringtones “ Endless ”  customization possibilities (covers, LED, logos, ringtones) No mobile Internet, GPS, apps

It was year 2005 Color displays, polyphonic ringtones Mobile Internet (GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, Wi-Fi) GPS, camera, video, music and some apps
Nokia today Moving away from Symbian (Anna and Belle) Maemo -> MeeGo -> ? Microsoft and Windows Phone

It was year 2009 Capacitive touchscreen , HVGA resolution, 3.2 ”  display (~180 ppi) Android 1.6 Problems, lags, freezes, but potential is huge Apps
It was year 2010
It was year 2010 Bigger and better screens, WVGA resolution  More memory, faster CPUs, better cameras (720p video) Evolution of Android (fragmentation, rooting/ROMs)  Apps, apps, appps!!!
It is year 2011
It is year 2011 Dual and quad core processors - more power (1080p video, 3D games) Android tablets (+ Kindle Fire, Barnes&Noble Nook) NFC, cloud computing/services Android 4.0 Apps, apps, apps, appps!!!
Android today >225 million devices sold since launch >550,000 new Android devices are activated every day Android has about 48% of the smartphone market share ~2% of Android devices are tablets 2.2 Froyo (35,3%), 2.3.x Gingerbread (50,6%) devices Revenue comes from search

My experience with BlackBerry and Windows Phone Great messaging Metro UI is interesting and something new Microsoft services & products No localisation Problems with apps Problems with devices Nokia + Windows Phone = ?

And one more thing... Example where closed system is better than open one User experience (people like simple and neat things) People buy simple and neat apps I don ’ t have an iPhone... yet
