What is MOOC?What is MOOC?
The significant impact of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) is just starting to be felt. Tens of millions of
learners worldwide, irrespective of their background and location, can now have free access to quality
education which traditionally can only be accessed by enrolling at those elite institutions and paying hefty
tuition fees. The fundamental characteristics of a MOOC course is that it is openly accessible via the Internet,
usually delivered by professors from world renowned universities, in most cases free of charge and in some
l ’ i k d d f ll f l i ifi b b i d fcases learners’ assignments are even marked and, for a small fee, a completion certificate can be obtained from
a MOOC provider as well.
To many universities, MOOCs are being seen as a threat to the traditional classroom type of delivery education.
To MOOC or not to MOOC, “what are the critical issues?”, “what are the established business models?”, “how
to govern quality?”, “how to conduct assessments?”, etc. are among many of the core issues actively being
discussed by university administrators and academics worldwide.

Organized by the Knowledge Management and Innovation
Research Centre of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University,
this inaugural MOOCs forum aims to provide a vibrant
platform for sharing, discussing and exploring many of the
issues related to MOOCs. In particular, VIPs, invited
speakers and panelists will come from established MOOC
provider(s), university administrators that have lead their
institution(s) into a MOOC journey, academics who
have designed and delivered MOOC courses,
representative(s) from traditional e-learning and corporate
universities, e-learning pedagogy and instructional design
researchers and past MOOC learners Together the aboveresearchers, and past MOOC learners. Together, the above
