Nelson Mandela guided South Africa from the shackles
of apartheid to a multi-racial democracy, as an icon of
peace and reconciliation who came to embody the
struggle for justice around the world.
“I hate race discrimination most intensely and in all its
manifestations. I have fought it all during my life; I will
fight it now, and will do so until the end of days,”
Mandela said in his acceptance speech on becoming
South Africa’s first black president in 1994.
Continued
“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle
of the African People. I have fought against white
domination, and I have fought against black domination.”
“We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation.”
“I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society
in which all persons live together in harmony and with
equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for
and to see realized. But if it needs be, it is an ideal for
which I am prepared to die." he told in the court.
