The document discusses and compares two potential horror film openings - one involving a woman running through the woods who discovers a creepy cabin ("Cabin") and the other involving a woman in her house who becomes possessed ("Possession"). It provides details on the plot, casting, length, target audiences, inspirations, shots, sound, lighting, resources needed, and logos for the potential film distributor for both ideas.
1. Sam, Danny and LukeNeither name is set
in stone but these
are the most likely
names so far
2. Casting: Cabin;
Amy-louise Chandler- running girl
Robert Allen– antagonist
Possession;
…………-The wife that gets possessed
Sam Allen-Husband sleeping
Length: 1 hour 47
3. Girl running through a forest to keep fit, just
a nice gentle jog. As she is running she is
oblivious to creepy happenings going on
around her. Then she comes across a cabin
and a whole manner of things happen.
A young lady alone in her house, as she is
walking around she comes across a shadow
and becomes possessed…. The long and the
short of it she kills her husband but you
don’t see that in the start, you just see her
flickering in the door way of his room.
4. Both of the ideas are pitched to the same audiences
Ages: 15-25; young adults and couples.
Gender: possibly both genders however leaning towards
males because of the sex appeal of the women in either
opening, but both sexes may come as the ideas would
be the perfect movies for a first date.
Economic state: To everyone really because it wouldn’t
be a massive production, but it would still be appealing
to the more wealthy audience.
Interest: Intelligent people because the storyline is
complex.
Job: Maybe a boring tedious job so they can escape to
the false reality of a thriller.
5. ‘Nightmare on elm street’ for the irony of the
music.
‘Shrooms’ because of the setting in the forest.
‘Scary movie 4’ for the oblivious young women
at the start.
‘Insidious’ for concept contribution
6. Birds eye view shot- To establish the setting of the place where the girl is
running.
Low angle shot- To show how the girl coming over a horizon.
High angle shot- To give the effect of the nooses swinging in the wind as she
runs past them.
Wide shot- To show exactly where the girl is running at the same time as
watching her run through it.
Medium shot- To give the expression of the girl yet also show some of the
scene.
Extreme close up- The close up on a certain feature of a character/object to
give a distorted image.
Close up- To show the raw emotion on a characters face or to establish a
symbol of an object.
Two shot- To show a show of both characters.
Over the shoulder shot- To make the audience feel as if they are in the scene
with the characters.
Point of view shot- To convey the scene through the eyes of the character.
7. Low angle shot- between the woman's legs as a view of
the kitchen.
Two shot- when the characters are coversing.
Close up- of the woman’s face as she is possessed.
Extreme close up- to watch the eye roll back into her
head.
Medium shot- to show the scene yet still show the
expression of the characters face.
Long shot- of the woman (before the blackout)
beginning to crawl through the corridor.
Over the shoulder shot- along with the panning of the
camera over the sofa to establish the scene of a house.
Wide shot- To establish the end part where the women
is in the doorway of her room.
8. Cabin
Runners track- Anything could happen: Ellie Goulding. When the
mysterious things start happening a deep guitar sound is made.
Possession
The natural sound from the TV, the footsteps of the women, the
glasses smashing, snarling from the women, a TV report playing in the
background.
As you can see the sound is very different in each idea; this is because
we wanted to try out 2 complete different styles before we pick our
favourite and most effective. Cabin features mostly non-diegetic
sound of the contrapuntal music with a few scenes with diegetic
breathing. Whereas Possession is more naturalistic with the diegetic
sounds that would usually go on in this kind of scene in place, until
the non-diegetic sound at the end of the opening.
9. Cabin
Natural lighting from the forest. Antagonist sees the women in
dampened colours.
Possession
The lighting will be low key with the key lights giving the
majority of the light to the scene (in the front room the TV is
the key light, in the hall way the kitchen is the key light, in the
bedroom the hallway is the key light).
Same as the sound the lighting is totally contrasted in the ideas.
Cabin has very natural lighting from the forest; which adds to
the irony of the opening. However in Possession the lighting is
very low key and dim to allow us to develop the tension through
the scene easier.
10. Cabin
Woodland
A good camera with the tripod
Thick rope tied into nooses
A big axe
A good looking female
A cabin in the woods
Possession
House
Young lady
Glass
Male in bed
Again with the
naturalistic theme
of possession we
don’t need as many
resources.
11. Cabin
A forest (Frylands wood campsite. Because it is
an isolated forest which is full of creepy trees.
To set the tension at a high from the very first
scene of the opening.
Possession
A normal suburban house, this will lead the
target audience in a false sense of security
about the thriller movie; contrapuntal scenery if
you wish.
12. Both ideas are hybrid genres between thriller and horror.
Mise-en-scene: For cabin this is going to be simple as the
forest already holds all the common scenery within it; except
for the axe and nooses. With Possession we just need the
stereotypical red wine glasses and a couple to create the
mise-en-scene.
Setting: (explained earlier in the presentation)
Themes: Both ideas have the same themes of a women
becoming in terror.
Iconography: For Cabin the iconography would be the axe,
nooses and the cabin as they are symbols of the rest of the
films. However in Possession there are no symbols
established for the rest of the film.
Sound and music: (explained earlier in the presentation)
13. All three of us are going to create a distributer
logo and then collaborate to decide which one
is the best suited for the genre and the
opening.
Ideas
Deadshot studios
Smash hit productions
Grim productions
14. Cabin
The runner: A good looking young blonde, blue
eyed girl, typical teenager running through the
local woods to keep fit.
The antagonist: A massive paw of a hand is all that
is seen. By the looks of it the antagonist has been
living in the forest for quite some time.
Possession
The women: A good looking female with a ring on
her finger to symbolise marriage, just having a
casual night in with her man.
