2. Tom Jenkins
Tom Jenkins is a sports photographer that travels the world
getting photos of many different sports. He has been to six
football World Cups and four summer Olympic Games, he
says these were the best experiences of his career. Tom says
that he always dreamt of being a sportsman but never fully
had the enthusiasm to make it. So as he began to study
photography in school he realised that he could enter the
sport industry from a different angle.
Tom went to the documentary Photography course run by
Magnum member David Hurn at Newport, South Wales. He
left the course in 1989 and started to freelance for the
agency AllSport along with newspapers such as The
Independent and Sunday Telegraph. In 1990 he began to do
work for the guardian and is still there today.
He lives in London with his Wife and his two children, he says
none of them are interested in football which he loves.
3. Rule of thirds – The player is the vocal point of the
image as he is in the centre.
Camera angle – The shot is taken from a low angle
looking upwards at the player walking up the stairs to
collect the trophy for the 2004 Rugby World Cup.
The player is the main subject but the people in the
crowd are still subjects as they're in focus.
Framing – Framed so it shows the main subject at the
front of the image with his fans surrounding him.
Lighting – The photo is an action shot at a stadium so
the light used in the image is natural light from the
flood lights as the photographer doesn’t have any
control over them. Although you could argue that its
non-natural light due to the fact that the flood lights
are powered by electricity and someone has turned
them on.
The photo has a shallow depth of field as some of the
background is out of focus meanwhile the fans and
the player are in focus.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is to show that
the player with the number 10 on his back is the hero
as he's walking up the stairs and everyone is trying to
shake his hand.
Shutter Speed – The photographer caught the player
walking up the stairs with all the fans waving their
hands at him to try and touch him. As the fans and
the player are in focus even though they are all
moving shows that a fast shutter speed was used.
4. Rule of Thirds – Ronaldo is in the centre of the photo
so he would be in the middle square. He is the vocal
point of the image.
Camera angle – The photo is taken at a low angle
looking up at the players, but the main focus is
Ronaldo.
The main subject of the photo is Ronaldo as he's
scoring the penalty were as if Riena saved it he would
be the main focus of the photo.
Framing – The photo is framed so it shows minimal
subjects but has the crowd in the background.
The photo has a shallow depth of field as Ronaldo is
fully in focus meanwhile Riena is out of focus along
with Rooney and the crowd in the background.
Lighting – The lighting in this photo is natural light
from the sun as it’s a mid day premier league game in
the summer.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is to show one
of the best players of all time scoring a penalty in a
match against his teams biggest rivals. It puts across
a message that Ronaldo has all eyes on him as you
can see the large crowd behind him.
Shutter Speed – In the photo the photographer
catches a shot after Ronaldo just kicked the ball from
the penalty spot along with the ball actually flying
into the goal. This is a fast shutter speed as the
photographer caught Ronaldo after kicking the ball
and Reina diving for it without them both being
completely blurred out.
5. Rule of Thirds – Most of the athletes body is
in the 3 boxes going down the middle as he's
the main subject of the image.
Camera angle – It is a low angle looking
upwards at the athlete. This is done to make
him seem great and intimidating.
The main subject of this photo is the athlete
as he's in focus. There are no other subjects
in this photo.
Framing – Framed so it has the main subject
up close in the centre and in focus with the
large stadium in the background.
The photo has a shallow depth of field as the
main subject is fully in focus meanwhile the
background is blurry as its not as important
as the athlete.
Lighting – The lighting in this photo is natural
light from the sun. You can tell natural light
was used as you can see the bright blue sky in
the background behind the athlete.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is to
show that even though this man has a
disability he can still be a high level athlete.
The low angle helps this meaning massively.
Shutter Speed – In the photo the
photographer caught the athlete running past
him on the track. The photo has a fast
shutter speed as the athlete ran past him as
the photo was taken but still managed to
fully be in focus.
7. Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz was born on October 2nd 1949. She is one of
the 6 children that her mother gave birth to. She studied at
Northwood High School where she found that she had an
interest in music. Then after school she began to attend the
San Francisco Art Institute where she studied painting but
then a point came where she wanted to try photography and
she fell in love with it. She started her professional
photography career working for Rolling Stone magazine as
staff photographer but then in 1973 the publisher Jann
Wenner made Annie chief photographer of the magazine on a
10 year contract. She worked for the Rolling stone until 1983
when she left for bigger opportunities.
8. Rule of Thirds – The women’s face is in the middle
box of the Rule of Thirds.
Camera angle – The angle used in this photo is an eye
level camera angle to make her stand out to the
audience as she's looking at you.
The main and only subject of the photo is the women.
Framing – Framed so the women is up close and in
focus along with a plain background to make her
stand out as much as possible.
The photo has a shallow depth of field as she is fully
in focus whereas the background and parts of her hair
are blurry. This is done because the background has
zero importance, the photo is all about her.
Lighting – The lighting in this photo is non-natural
light as the photo was taken in a studio with manual
lights. You can tell this as a studio background is used
and the light is perfectly lighting her up.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is to show that
as she is doing different movies and playing different
roles she is changing herself every time.
Shutter Speed – In this photo the women's hair is
moving by what will probably be a wind machine as
the photo was shot in a studio. She will also be
moving her face around with her hands to get a
various amount of different shots. The photo was
taken with a fast shutter speed as even though
various parts of her face and head is moving she is
still very much in focus and not fully blurred out.
9. Rule of Thirds – Leonardo Di Caprio and the animal are
on the right side of the photo in the 3 boxes going down
that side.
Camera angle – The angle used in this photo is a high
angle to make Leo look scared and innocent.
There are two subjects in this photo, the main subject is
Leo as he's giving direct address to the camera. Then he's
holding an animal which makes it the second subject of
the image.
Framing – The photo is framed so even though the
subjects aren't in the centre of the photo they still stand
out massively.
The photo has a shallow depth of field as Leo and the
animal are fully in focus whereas all the grass in the
background is out of focus.
Lighting – This photo is black and white but you can still
see that the light used for this photo was natural light
from the sun. You can see that the two subjects and half
of the image is bright but then towards the bottom left
of the image is dark.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is to show Leo
looking after the upset animal by hugging it and by the
animal looking depressed this makes Leo look depressed,
this makes them look weak and vulnerable.
Shutter Speed – In this photo it is clearly windy as you
can see that the grass is moving in the background, also
as Leo is holding a wild animal that could easily be
moving while he holds it which shows that a fast shutter
speed was used while taking this photo.
10. Rule of Thirds – There are two subjects in this photo,
one is in the boxes going down the left and the other
is in the boxes going down the right.
Camera angle – The angle used in this photo is an eye
level camera angle to make her look equal to the
audience.
Although this image is a photo of the same person
pulling different facial expressions I believe that
there are two different subjects in the photo. When
you first look at the image the face on the left stands
out to the audience due to her energetic facial
expression and as she is up close to the camera, that
face is the main subject as it stands out more than
anything else in the image. Then the photo on the
right is the second subject as it has minimal
expression and is just a sad face.
Framing – The photo is framed so that the face on
the left stands out and is the vocal point of the
image.
The photo has a shallow depth of field as the subjects
are fully in focus meanwhile the background is blurry.
Lighting – This photo has soft lighting as there is
minimal shade on her face, she is pretty much fully lit
up. This tells me that this photo was definitely taken
in a studio with studio lights.
Meaning – The meaning of this image is to show to
different human emotions, happy and exited on the
left, then on the right sad and depressed.
Shutter Speed – In this photo the subject will have
clearly been moving her face around pulling different
facial expression through the photoshoot so as her
face is fully in focus a fast shutter speed was used.
12. Mario Testino
Mario Testino is a fashion and portrait photographer who's
work has been used in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue,
GQ and V Magazine. He has also taken photos for huge
brands such as Michael Kors, Estée Lauder, Gucci, Chanel,
Lancome and Burberry. Along side being a photographer
Mario has also worked as a museum founder, creative
director and a guest editor.
Mario was born and raised in Lima alongside 5 other
children. When he was young he wanted to be a priest. He
studied Economics at Universidad del Pacífico followed by
Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and the University of
San Diego.
He stopped studying economics in 1976 and went to London
to study photography as he thought that could be his new
passion, and it was. After working in London for a while his
work eventually got noticed and appeared in Vogue in 1983.
That’s when his life changed.
13. Rule of Thirds – The two subjects are in the 3 boxes going down the
left and the 3 going down the right. Although there not in the
centre boxes they still stand out massively due to the plain
background.
Camera angle – The angle used in this photo is an eye level camera
angle with the subject on the right. This is because he is the main
subject in the photo.
In this photo there are two subjects which are the dog and the man.
The man is the main subject as he has direct address with the
camera and he is higher up than the dog. The dog is then the
second subject as it is lower than the man and is looking upwards
towards him which tells the audience that the man has a larger
importance than the dog in this photo.
Framing – The photo is framed so that the dog has less importance
in the photo then the man.
This photo has a shallow depth of field as the two subjects are fully
in focus as they are the vocal points of the whole image meanwhile
the background is blurred out.
Lighting – This photo has soft lighting as the majority of the
subjects are lit up meanwhile a small part of them both is dark. The
lighting used in the photo is clearly studio lights as the background
is a studio background and the lights have been adjusted to just
light up the mans face and keep the sides of this head dark as there
not important to the photo.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is to show that although
humans and dogs are completely different physically, they are the
same with their feelings and emotions. This photo proves this point
as the dog and the man are both pulling the same expression as
they're angry at something.
Shutter Speed – In this photo a fast shutter speed was used as the
dog is clearly moving around barking along with the man probably
pulling many different facial expressions meanwhile both subjects
are fully in focus.
14. Rule of thirds – The two subjects are both in the
centre 3 boxes going down the centre.
Camera angle – The angle of this photo is a
slightly low angle to make the subjects seem
amazing and intimidating to the audience.
In this photo the two women are the only subjects
in the photo. The main subject is the women on
the right as she's closer to the camera. Although
they both have direct address with the camera
the women on the left is further back so she's the
second subject.
Framing – This photo is framed so that although
there's a lot in the background the two subjects
still stand out the most.
This photo has a shallow depth of field as both
subjects are fully in focus meanwhile some of the
background is out of focus. The photo were taken
like this so that the subjects are the vocal points
of the image.
Lighting – Although the photo was taken outside
the lighting used in this photo is non-natural light.
The photo was clearly taken with the flash feature
turned on as the subjects whole bodies are lit up
perfectly.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is fashion
based as most of the women's bodies are in the
photo lit up by the flash on the camera. The low
camera angle and direct address makes the
models look good so this will make the target
audience want to buy the clothes to feel like
these women.
Shutter Speed – A fast shutter speed was used
while taking this photo as the girls are walking
and the wind is blowing their hair around
meanwhile they are still in focus.
15. Rule of Thirds – The shot is a close up so the two subjects
cover up the majority of the boxes. Their faces are quite
central as they're the vocal points of the image, most of
their faces are in the centre boxes going down the middle.
Camera Angle – The angle of this is an eye level camera
angle with the two subjects in the photo.
In this photo there are two subjects which are William and
Kate. They are equal as subjects as they are both smiling
and have direct address with the camera. The two subjects
have equal importance in this photo.
Framing – This photo is framed so that Kate and William
cover the majority of the frame apart from a bit of the top
left and top right. The photo is framed this way as Kate
and William are very important people and they need to
stand out.
This photo has a shallow depth of field as Kate and William
are fully in focus meanwhile the background behind them
is very much out of focus as that’s not important atoll, the
subjects are.
Lighting – The lighting used in this photo is natural light as
you can see that the sun is shining through the window
from behind them.
Meaning – The meaning of this photo is to send a message
to lots of couples out there that they should be happy in
their relationships like William and Kate are.
Shutter Speed – In this photoshoot William and Kate will
have been doing many different poses so a fast shutter
speed was used to catch the shot and get them in focus.
