James Weldon Johnson (Author study!) Born James William Johnson in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 17 1871. He changed his middle name to Weldon in 1913. He attended Atlanta University, where he earned his A.B. in 1894, Johnson taught for two summers in rural Hampton, Georgia. In 1895 he founded a newspaper, the Daily American , designed to educate Jacksonville's adult black community, but due to problems with finances it was forced to shut down after only eight months. Johnson died on 26 June 1938 near his summer home in Wiscasset, Maine, when the car in which he was driving was struck by a train. His funeral in Harlem was attended by more than 2000 people.
Poem #1 (book) The glory of the day was in her face! By James Weldon Johnson The glory of the day was in her face, The beauty of the night was in her eyes. And over all her loveliness, the grace Of morning blushing in the early skies. And in her voice, the calling of the dove; Like music of a sweet melodious part. And in her smile, the breaking light of love; And all the gentle virtues in her heart. And now the glorious day, the beauteous night, The birds that signal to their mates at dawn, To my dull ears, to my tear-blinded sight Are one with all the dead, since she is gone.
Explication! (poem#1) Title~ The Glory Of The Day Was In Her Face! Author~ James Weldon Johnson Type of poem~ Ballad Literary Devices~ 12 lines
Response I thought that this poem was pretty good. To me it was one of the best in the book. The first time I real it, I didn’t understand it. But the more I read it, It became clear to me! I think that, in this poem the speaker, compares someone he admires with natural beauty. And that none of those things matter anymore because she is gone!
Poem# 2 Life By Henry Van Dyke Let me but live my life from year to year,     With forward face and unreluctant soul;      Not hurrying to, nor turning from the goal; Not mourning for the things that disappear In the dim past, nor holding back in fear     From what the future veils; but with a whole      And happy heart, that pays its toll To Youth and Age, and travels on with cheer. So let the way wind up the hill or down,     O'er rough or smooth, the journey will be joy:      Still seeking what I sought when but a boy, New friendship, high adventure, and a crown,     My heart will keep the courage of the quest,      And hope the road's last turn will be the best.
Explication (poem#2) Title~ Life Author~ Henry Van Dyke Type of Poem~ Ballad Literary Devices~ 14 lines
Response I like this poem a lot, because it relates to me in a way. because I sort of live buy this life style. This poem is about living your life and never looking back. Just keep moving forward!
Poem #3 (Site) From a secret admirer By anonymous! Whose gift this is you cannot know. My heart is in your keeping though. You will not mind my writing here To tell you that I love you so. I know that you must think it queer For me to love and not come near But linger by some frozen lake This most romantic time of year. I sometimes give my head a shake And ask if there is some mistake. It's lonely out here 'mid the sweep Of bitter wind and icy flake. My love for you is dark and deep, But it's a promise I will keep As from afar I watch and weep, As from afar I watch and weep
Explication (poem#3) Title~ From A Secret Admirer Author~ Anonymous Type Of Poem~ Ballad Literary Devices~ 16 lines
response I choose this poem because I’m pretty sure most people can relate to it. Especially those hopeless romantics out there. Also I think its pretty we’ll put together. It’s to bad the author is anonymous!
Poem#4 (site) Secret Love By ray hansell Hidden in a room Out of view I can only imagine The magic things we'll do Laying down, standing up Or maybe on our knee's I only know one thing for sure That I'll keep coming back for more Because you please me to no end Shivers up my spine you send You shake me right to my core No one could ever love me more
Explication (poem#4) Title~ Secret Love Author~ Ray Hansell Type of poem~ Ballad Literary Devices~12 lines
Response I honestly think this poem sounds kind of perverted when I first read it. Even now, when I read it I think it sounds pretty weird. But I guess it just depends on how you read interpret it!
Where do I get the words To express how I feel How on earth do I tell you That these feelings are real There must be some way To prove my love to you But what can I say So you'll believe it's true I'm not sure how to explain What I'm feeling inside But it's in you my love That I wish to confide So please listen closely As I attempt to expose All the things that are locked up That no one else knows I've loved in the past But never cared so deeply Nor cherished any man So strongly and passionately I've never been so happy Never smiled so much And never melted so quickly From any mans touch You set my body on fire With each and every kiss I feel a sting in my stomach As you bring true bliss When I look into your eyes All I see is perfection To me you are flawless God's finest creation With each day that passes I love you even more For now and for ever You're the one I'll adore My Attempt By anonymous Poem#5 (site)
Explication (poem#5) Title~ My Attempt Author~ Anonymous Type of poem~ Ballad (I think) Literary devices~ 36 lines
Response This poem is so long. Although it is long, I can still relate to this poem because i have felt this way once before. And I’m pretty sure that everyone has experienced it once before also.
