- 2. The percentage was stable/stayed the same (under 5%) from 1950 until about 1980 when it started to rise, predicted to go up very rapidly from 2010 to 2040, rising to 23% in 2050. You shouldn’t be explaining it only says describe! Stuff to do with why it’s going up like better healthcare, would be explaining.

Something about making people carry on working for longer (not retiring till later like we’re doing in the UK, use examples!), make people pay more taxes/save more so the state can afford it, allow people to have more babies (China’s had a one child policy for a long time so there aren’t so many children to replace the older adults), encourage immigrants to come to China to fill the jobs.
- 8. Always been important, even in 1980 they were about a third of financial flows. Have increased from about 17bn to about 90bn dollars (DON’T FORGET TO USE NUMBERS), now almost a third of inflow, more than aid but less than investment by business.
- 9. Loss of young adults (often men) leaves young, old, women behind. Migrants tend to be more able, ambitious, intelligent, well trained so the source country economy suffers. Fuels the desire of others to migrate so that it becomes the normal thing to do.

- 21. Places on the Mediterranean coast all have some retirees. The places with high percentages are often popular/well known holiday destinations (like the Canaries and Majorca). Being in the south (warmer) seems to attract people
- 22. People want to be “on holiday” permanently, want warm weather. It’s cheaper to live and buy property and people from EU countries don’t have to apply to live here. Was free health care (now the Spanish are changing all that). People from within Euro zone don’t have to change money to another currency. Lots of other retired people and activities organised for them (familiar things to do).
- 23. Costs – extreme strain on health/social services because retired people need more health care. This was free to all, not now. However people on incapacity benefit from the UK still get free care (because we’d do the same for the Spanish). Lots of elderly migrants don’t integrate with local people and don’t speak the language
- 24. Benefits – Property development has been booming business as property was built to provide for the migrants. Costs of property rose (but now it’s not as the recession bites). Many of the people moving there are quite well off and so spend money in local businesses helping the economy.
