Gordon Murray, chief designer at Motor Racing
Developments, better known as Brabham, a
British racing car manufacturer, spent all his
days agonizing over problem that plagued many
mechanical engineers in the industry – How to
design a car that would outpace the others and
win the championship at Formula One. What did
he do achieve it?
He introduced the Pit Stop. He realized that the
car can be made faster, if it is lighter. The car can
become light only if it reduces the amount of
fuel. So the solution was planned stops for
refueling. The speed gained by a light car could
offset the time spent for refueling if it could be
completed within 26 secs. This was the birth of
super fast Pit Stops
