punishment for a sin or wrongdoing.
• Hester's punishment is to wear the
letter "A" and withstand 3 hours of
public shame on the scaffold.
• The scaffold holds a connection to
Hester throughout her life and serves
as part of her identity.
UNITY
- Creates Unity between the three

at all.
FINAL NOTES
• In the Scarlet Letter, the scaffold has been a platform structuring sin, punishment,
confession, exposure to truth, point of view, the ideals of the Puritan society, and so
on.
• The 3 scaffold scenes provide the backbone of the story which everything revolves
around.
