The student completed a practicum period teaching 5th year secondary school students. At first, she was nervous about teaching teenagers from her small town. However, the students were respectful and tried hard in their lessons. The student noticed the students felt motivated and enjoyed the lessons, especially using English throughout. In the future, the student would ensure all students understand activities and vocabulary before working independently to avoid delays. Overall, the experience gave the student confidence and helped her grow as a teacher.

My reflection on Secondary School Practicum Period
My practicum period on secondary school was a great experience. I worked with 5th
year, a group in which there are ten students. The original aim of this project was
to show myself as a teacher of teenagers and to show how I manage my teaching
skills and strategies.
When I started this experience I was a bit nervous because I didn’t know how the
students would react with my presence in the classroom. As we live in a really small
town in which we all know each other and I am quite young, I was afraid of how the
students would respond to my lessons. Fortunately, they were very respectful with
me. They felt confident with me and they always tried to work as good as possible
in order to give me the best experience possible. I think it was a significant
experience for them too because they could know a different way of teaching and a
different learning environment. I noticed that they felt motivated and they enjoyed
the lessons we shared.
As I said in the reflection of the previous practicum periods, one of the things I
won’t change has to do with speaking English during the whole lesson. Although at
the beginning of the period I thought it would be difficult to do it this way, the
students got used to my teaching style and they started feeling confident with their
understanding. Some of them always tried to use English during the lesson and this
made me feel that they were enjoying the lessons.
On the other hand, if I had to develop this experience again I would try that
student all understand the activities and the vocabulary I choose for the tasks
before start working. It happened to me in one of the lessons that students had to
answer questions about them but they didn’t understand some of these questions
2. and how to answer them. My mistake was that I didn’t revise them with the whole
group so then I had to do it with each of the students, so it took more time than
expected. So I think this is one of the aspects I have to improve and take into
account for my future experiences.
Having done my practicum period in the secondary school of my town has given
me lots of self confidence. I know that people always say “you don’t have to care
about what other people think or say about you”, but I also know that we DO care
what people think after all and people are always trying to give good impressions.
Personally, in my town people are always looking at what the others do or not, so
for me it was really important to show myself as teacher and to have such a great
feedback from the students.
My practicum period on secondary school was a big challenge and I’m really
satisfied with it. It helped me grow and learn from the others. It also gave me the
opportunity to know the teenagers of my town and to make them know me from
another perspective. This experience was meaningful for me from all the point of
view.
