Background
● Reached out to facilities within the Penn Health System and other
hospitals in the SGRT community.
● Exclusive insight into Patient Experience because SGRT is not
utilized at Penn Hospital on a grand scale.
Shared Knowledge
Collaboration within the field of Radiation Oncology is an intricate part
of what we do in order to deliver quality patient care.
Using patient data from multiple institutions, I cross referenced how
patient experience varied with the use of Vision RT
Patient’s Feedback on SGRT
● Developed questions and sent them to other sites that utilize
SGRT
● Compiled the answers from all institutions
● Many answers were the same across different patients
populations
What matters the most to a patient — she/he was getting the
right care for their cancer
What is Patient Experience?
1. The care they receive from their health care providers
2. How are they perceived at the initial interaction
3. The clarity with which they are explained the situation
4. Choosing the correct hospital
5. Personal vs impersonal treatment — “am I just a number?”
6. Proper delivery of care by therapists and nurses
1. How did you feel when your therapist explained to
you this SGRT treatment method that would be
utilized as part of your treatment?
● I was fine with it, although I did not fully comprehend all of it until midway through my treatment
● I have no medical background but as my doctors deemed it necessary to help with my treatment I am
all for it.
● It reassured me that I will be treated correctly even if I accidentally move
● I felt great that another layer of security would be added to my treatment.
● I was somewhat skeptical at first, because I was already nervous about receiving radiation, but the
therapist made me feel very comfortable.
2. How do you feel about tattoos? How does
tattooless treatment make you feel, and would you
seek out a center that uses this treatment method
vs. one that doesn’t?
● Tattoos do not bother me at all so whether I have to get them or not as long as I am being treated
correctly that’s is all I really care about.
● I would rather not have any tattoos if possible, so but If I must it’s alright.
● I would rather have the tattoos.
● It makes no difference just want to be treated and get cured from my cancer.
3. Heart sparing (DIBH) is a huge part of utilizing
SGRT due to toxicities that can occur. Would you
seek out a center with SGRT for this reason?
● If this method can help reducing toxicity to my heart them I am all for it.
● Yes I am concerned about toxicity to my heart
● I am happy that this method will be utilized during my treatment
● I would definitely seek out a center that uses this method and this is part of my reason for getting
treatment at Pennsylvania Hospital
● I am very happy that you’ll be utilizing this method of treatment.
4. Accuracy is a vital part of radiation treatment
delivery. Would you seek out a center that utilizes
SGRT for that reason?
● I did not know anything about SGRT until I entered the treatment room on my first day (PAH does not
use SGRT in simulation room).
● I knew about it; however, seeing that I’ve established a good relation with my oncologist I don’t think I
would choose another center.
● Considering all the other treatment aspect that goes into planning my care,I don’t think I would seek
out another center; however, I am happy that it’s part of my treatment regiment.
(Virtua Health Care) : Most of the patients that were surveyed were unaware of SGRT until we explained
we were utilizing it, but they were glad once we explained it to them.
5. Did you at any point think to yourself; I have
cancer so whatever methods it takes to help gets me
better is all I care about?
● (Pennsylvania Hospital) : Many patients gave the same answers as Virtua; however, there were a few
different answers.
● Seeing how much I want to get cured, I am happy that this method is being incorporated in my
treatment plan.
● Even though this method has been explained to me, I still don’t have a full understanding of it, but
has long as my physician deemed it necessary I am all for it.
● After It was explained to me I went online to do some research so I was very happy it was being
used.
(Virtua Health Care): All patients responded yes to this question.
6. Treatment time is reduced using SGRT, how does
this make you feel? Would you do anything
differently in seeking a center that uses SGRT?
● Asking this particular question did not generate a response unlike the other questions on the survey.
For most of the patients surveyed this was their first encounter with radiation.
● (Virtua Health System): Most responded that they are happy to know that SGRT would shorten their
treatment time, and would not do anything differently.
● (Pennsylvania Hospital) : Staying in the room by myself for a shorter time frame is fine with me.
● Response from a breast cancer patient who had one breast treated before and had the other treated
with SGRT was happy to know that SGRT would shorten her treatment time and she would not seek
out a different center.
7. Do you believe your therapist explained SGRT
treatment method so you could fully understand the
logic behind it?
● (Pennsylvania Hospital): Eight patients answered this question and they all agreed that it was
thoroughly explained to them, even though three individuals stated it was mid way through their
treatment when they finally grasped the concept of SGRT.
● (Virtua Health System): All patients that were surveyed stated that SGRT was fully explained to them
and that they totally understand the logic behind it.
● One patient stated that he got very nervous and worried that he might move, but once it was re-
explained to him that if moved the beam would stop immediately, he was satisfied.
8. SGRT makes it possible to use open face mask
(whenever applicable) how does this make you feel?
Would you choose a center that uses SGRT for this
reason?
● (Ventura Helath system): Does not use open face mask so this question could not be completed
there.
● (Pennsylvania Hospital): All the patients that were receiving Hyper Arc treatment were very happy
that using SGRT allowed for open face mask.
● Several patients, majority males, stated that they are claustrophobic and were happy not to be in the
closed face mask.
● At time of survey there was not a large number of patients requiring Open face mask but they all had
a positive response to the use of SGRT.
9. Does the light used by SGRT bother you in
any way?
● (Virtua Health System): All responses from patients was yes; some stated they were told if the light
bothered their eyes they could close them.
● (Pennsylvania Hospital): Some patients stated that they were worried about the light on their face
but reported that if they were given an eye shield they were fine
● A few patients stated that it was somewhat weird having the light on but got accustomed to it with
time.
● Some stated they just wanted to get treated and that as long as SGRt helps them stay in position for
treatment having the light on was fine.
10. Did you become comfortable right away
with the use of SGRT?
● (Pennsylvania Hospital): Several patients stated SGRT was fine, because it was part of the treatment
plan.
● Six of the patients who took part in the Survey stated that grasping the concept of how SGRT works
took some time before they really understood its concept
● (Virtua Health System): Patients who answered this question all seem to understand how SGRT
works after it was explained by the therapist
11. After understanding how SGRT treatment method
works, did you become content knowing, for
example, that if you moved or changed your
breathing pattern during treatment, the treatment
beam would stop which would avoid radiation going
to an area that was not under treatment?
● (Virtura Health System): Yes, this was reassuring. One patient stated she had aortic valve
replacement and that she was very concerened about heart dose.
● (Pennyslvania Hospital): All the patients stated that after having a full understanding of how SGRT
works they were happy to know that if they should move or change their breathing pattern SGRT
would stop the radiation beam.
12. SGRT is now being used worldwide due to its
accuracy in helping the delivery of radiation. After
your experience would you now tell family members
or friends to seek out Hospitals that utilize this
particular treatment method?
● (Virtura Health System): Yes I would definitely tell family members and friends should they ever get
diagnosed with cancer to seek out centers that use SGRT.
● (Virtura Health System) Yes, SGRT was easy and took the pressure off me as a patient. I felt less
anxiety knowing that my breathing and treatment were being monitored
● (Pennsylvania Hospital): All the patients who took the survey said that if their friends or family
members should ever require radiation they would recommend a center that uses SGRT.
● It should all be understood, that both institutions where the survey was done, SGRT is not used for
every type of cancer treatment, and are not tattoo less.
Final Take Away
Patients are very happy with the Utilization of SGRT,
knowing that there is an additional layer of safety added to
their treatment.
They will not necessarily leave their current provider to
seek SGRT out, but they hope all institutions who
administer radiation to patients would make SGRT a part of
their treatment regiment.
Questions
?
I would like to give credit to my
colleagues, without their help it would not
be possible to complete this survey.
Thanks so much.
