Smart lamp posts can serve several functions and these are currently experimented in Science Park (Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation). In terms of mobility, traffic and parking can be facilitated with the help of sensors. In practice, this means that it would be possible to monitor how vehicles and pedestrians move, and this would, in turn, help operating the traffic lights. The vacancy of parking areas can also be evaluated and shared with those in need. Gathered data is also used for environmental monitoring; to measure air quality and weather. Consequently, the government has decided to share additional data in 2019, growing the amount of open data sets up to 4000. Private and public organisations alike can utilise the open data as a source to build new or applied applications. Regardless of the current policies, the government’s open data plans and open data policy are considered to be inadequate as they leave out many relevant aspects.
