Over 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World as slaves between 1525 and 1866, with most working on plantations in the southern United States. While slaves were considered 3/5 of a person for representation, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments abolished slavery and granted citizenship and voting rights to African Americans after the Civil War ended the debate over slavery between the Northern and Southern states.
