Social class in Britain is divided into five categories: AB (higher and intermediate), C1 (supervisory and clerical), C2 (skilled manual), D (unskilled), and E (on state benefits). Cabinet positions have historically been held by those from aristocratic and middle class backgrounds, with few from working class backgrounds. Similarly, most MPs and civil servants have come from middle class backgrounds, though the percentage of Labour MPs from working class backgrounds has increased over time. Britain has seen significant changes from the 1960s to today, with increases in population, university degrees awarded, foreign holidays, and hours of television, and decreases in rail routes and smoking rates.
