The problem Ever-changing needs and expectations – more costs Wide portfolio of services, perhaps too wide to evaluate every contract for effectiveness Constrained resources Need to get the best return, in terms of a basket of contracts that provide a range of services in the right proportions
Who am I? Ex Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, PhD Durham University, RoI for public good organisations since 2002 2004 – Emergency Care Practitioner (national business case and “Measuring the Benefits”) Engaging with GPs 2008 “From Grants to Sustainable Contracts” – North East charities Develop a multi-commissioner health and social care contract to include Commissioning for Improvement (CQUIN) 2011 SROI report on Skills for People’s Quality Checkers (audits of user experience)
What is SROI? Many ways to evaluate Social Good To improve services through highlighting what works To understand how well a need is being met For internal use, or for external use Different resources required SROI is a framework, not a straightjacket Engaging with stakeholders (it’s their view of value) What changes, theory of change, attribution Transparency and verification Can be Forecast, or Evaluation Complimentary to many other ways (eg Social Audit, Charities Evaluation, Sustainability Reporting, IRIS)
What I’m proposing To meet your needs Review a contract that is a cause for concern Compare a number of contracts/ services for Social Return on Investment Knowledge Transfer Fixed Price per activity over Summer 2011 (no VAT)
