The novel was adapted into movie of the same name by Hemen Gupta in
1952. A new version of the song, sung by a Bharat Ratna awardee singer
which you must have heard today was used in the movie.

Neeraj Chopra’s Javelin Throw
Gumnami Baba, also known as Bhagwanji was an ascetic who lived in
different places of Uttar Pradesh for last 30 years of his life and was
cremated in Faizabad in 1985. His first appearance can be traced back to
1950s in Lucknow & his most remarkable trait was his undying commitment
towards remaining incognito.
In 2016 a Commission under Justice Sahai was formed after the order of
Allahabad High Court to find out the real identity of Bhagwanji which was
claimed to be X. Though this commission came to many conclusions about
similarities between Bhagwanji & X but the final hearing states that he was
probably an IB/CIA agent in disguise for an anonymous reason.

First use of it can be traced back to China where a king used it over the
wall of a city he was attacking to estimate the distance of enemy’s palace. It
came to India when the Mongols invaded & became a traditional sport of the
kings which sometimes involved betting/gambling.
Though this practice has been banned in some places for harming the
nature but it’s an integral part of a festival which is celebrated across India
by different names. Acc. to beliefs, this tradition is carried out for waking
God up from sleep and thanking for the sunlight that helps in getting rid
from skin infections and diseases. Somewhere it’s a form of celebration of
upcoming harvest season too.
What tradition/practice I’m talking about & which festival that is
celebrated in a city of western India with much fanfare that gets
participants from around the globe.
