TASK FOUR –
REPRESENTATION
ANALYSIS
FRONT COVER
• The artist on the front cover is represented as being very laidback
and shows the audience as being a casual celebrity. The pose that
the artist is undertaking gives the impression that he is cool and
enjoys what he does, the image would show the audience that the
story about him in the magazine is just a casual story and not
anything poor about him that he would be annoyed about.
• The artist shown is in his 20s, this represents that the younger
artists are more laidback and have an easy lifestyle.
• The artist is black, this is stereotypical for the Hip Hop genre
because most of the artists are coloured. This represents that
he may have had a bad life as a child and that maybe
his songs could have lyrics with meanings from his past.
FRONT COVER
• The language used is stereotypical for the genre of
the magazine, it also contributes to the social group
of coloured people because usually they would use
that sort of language. The clothing the artist is
wearing also adds to the stereotypes of the artists
ethnicity group because they are known to have a
fashion that the audience would be attracted to.
• The artist is a male which would mainly attract the
audience of the female group because they would be
more attracted to the male artists.
CONTENTS PAGE
• The image of the artist on the contents page is represented as being
serious and involved in the magazine more than the artist on the
front page. The way the image has been taken makes the artist
seem very angry and it seems like he is trying to connect with the
audience more than just having the picture taken.
• The artist has given the target audience the impression that he is
annoyed and very serious, this makes it an effective image to
the audience because the way he has been represented
shows the audience that he wants to attract a certain
social group.
CONTENTS PAGE
• The artist is again coloured, this represents the genre
as having the black ethnicity and that the magazines
target audience may be more to that ethnicity.
• The shot type used is a Big Close-Up (BCU) this could
show that the magazine think the artist would create
more of an effective image for the audience to see it
as appealing.
• The fonts used for the contents page would
contribute to the stereotypes of the audience because
the fonts use would be appealing towards the young
target audiences eye they are trying to receive.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
• The main image of the artists on the
double page spread are shown as
being angry and the body language
they are giving off could convey that
the story about them is quite serious.
• The other images on the right side of the double
page spread are showing interesting images of the
celebrity ‘Rihanna’ which relates to the title Friends
with benefits, these would appeal to
the audience because the way they have
represented the artist would make the
reader look and read the article.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
• The fonts and colours used
contribute to the bad
representations of the celebrities
because they are big and bold,
showing that the story is a big story
that the audience would be more
interested in because of how they
have set it out.
• The celebrities clothing is very
stereotypical for the Hip Hop genre
because it is street clothing and the
genre is a street music so they fit
together.• Hip Hop originates from African American
therefore the same ethnic people have
contributed to this genre as their culture.
