What have I learned?
• Overall from my research into music magazines I have found out the
target audience (age aspect) is incredibly similar.
• The mastheads are the most eye catching and the first thing you
notice.
• The artists indicate what genre the magazine is based on e.g. for rock
the artists hair colour is different and makeup portrays her as more
bold and dark at the same time.
Task 2: Detailed analysis of
music magazine
Chosen genre – pop/rock
Front cover
Typography- The masthead is serif and rest of text sans serif. This effectively makes the
masthead stand out, signifying its importance. It also is appealing to the eye as it produces
a sharp bold tone, similarly to the artist. This is significant as it along with other factors ( i.e.
the costume) catches the attention of the audience.
Colour- The most frequent colours used include; black, white and red. These are easily
recognisable, making this specific magazine ‘Q’ easy to identify, it is also eye catching. For
example the masthead being red and white effectively makes the, coverlines, coverstory
etc. revolve around it. These specific colours create something incredibly bold and well
seen. Fairly masculine colours are used which fundamentally helps achieve its target
audience (males). The ‘Q’ logo is so well known as a result of the maintaining colours and
style throughout each issue. In addition, the gold border around the edge of the cover
(excluding the masthead) catches the audiences eye also making this issue seem more
special as in the others there is so gold border. This connotes; wealth, royalty and
significance, making the magazine even more important.
Images- The main image on this cover is Beyoncé who is loved by both genders, she is a
very popular artist. This particular cover – as a result of the image - in theory broadens the
target audience, effectively having a positive outcome on their business. It can be admired
by males for her sexy appearance (the low cut jumpsuit, which is very short revealing a lot
of leg), and by women for her music that is most relatable to them. It still relates back to
attracting the eye of the male audience through the colour scheme too. She is obviously
conveyed as the most significant part of the image due to being the boldest and focused
part of it. As you can see the background is blurred, supporting my previous judgement.
Language- Positive and persuasive language to make people want to by the issue, such as;
“Greatest” and “Exclusive”.
Conventions- This cover is conventional for the following
reasons; the place of the masthead is conventional to other
magazines along with it being the largest text, the coverlines are
positioned around the image, masthead is placed in the top left
sides of the magazine. Also, font sizes vary for important
headlines, close up or mid shots of the artists placed in the cover
and the prices and some other information are placed at the top
of the magazine with barcodes near the bottom.
Layout- the layout is simple with the large main image centred
and the focal point of the magazine. The title of the magazine ‘Q’
is in the top left-hand corner of the magazine in the usual
position causing that to stand-out to the audience. The text is
neatly structured around the image giving a clean-cut stylish
image that is normally associated with the brand.
Contents page
Typography- The fonts on this page are a mixture of serif and sans serif. This makes
some of the text stand out more than others. This is specific with the intention to
attract the audience to a certain part first, for example; ‘Features’. The text is an easy
to read font. The colours used for the text make the words stand out more as white
stands out on red or black backgrounds, and black on a white background.
Layout- The layout is very neat and ordered making it very easy for the reader to
comprehend. The contents are at the side of the page which means that the readers
can see it quickly and get a quick idea of what is inside the magazine. It is pretty basic
with most of the page dominated by the image, which relates to the main story within
the article. The left side and very bottom boxes contain explanations of other articles
in the magazine in a simple form with the page number, title and small description. It
may not be as fancy as other magazines but is easy to read and understand ensuring
no confusion looking for something in the magazine.
Colour- Traditional colour scheme to the other issues, which is very effective. The
colours used are red, white and black. These are standard colours and help the words
to stand out. Again alike the cover there is use of gold which is unconventional and
does not fit the usual colour palette. The colours vary through the different section to
make is bolder and clearer, this makes it look neat and organized, this method it
effectively used to distinguish the different sets of information, also with the
background being white and text black it makes is easy to read. In the bottom right
hand corner the review section is completely different from the rest of the contents
page indicating this is more significant than the rest, also the grey used matches the
image background reflecting a sense of continuality.
Images- There is one main image that takes up most of the page. This gives the reader
something to look at and gives them a quick idea of the main stories. There is also
another smaller image at the bottom of the page that tells the reader about something
else in the magazine.
Conventions- colour scheme is conventional, along with the features surrounding the
image and not blocking it.
Double page spread
Typography- Use of mainly serif font making it formal and
sophisticated. The quote, kickers, title of article and name of artist
are bold. This emphasises and attracts the target audience.
Colour- The large translucent red ‘J’ matches with Jay Z on the
opposite page. The reader will also notice the quote in red and bold
on the page dominated by the image.
Images- The image itself shows Jay Z in sunglasses which could imply
that he wants to hide his emotions. It is also conveyed he could be in
two sets of mind as one side of the artist is dimly lit with a red tint,
whereas the other half is well lit which could resemble his undecided
mind set.
Language- The quote in red gives an insight into what the article will
consist of and entices the reader into reading further into the article.
Conventions- includes a quote, main image and text. Colour schemes
to establish/keep their identity.
Layout- This double page spread consists of an
image taking up one full page and another by text.
This works effectively as the audience an make the
link from the image to the text and they go
through the magazine, essentially making it clear
and enjoyable to look at/read. An extremely large
capital is used covering the majority of the page in
a translucent red colour. Giving the article a quirky
edge unlike other articles also making it more
interesting to look at it as it is unique. Without it
the page would be dull and boring resembling a
newspaper.
In addition columns are used effectively making
the reader feel they have read more and in a short
period of time.
