Today’s instruction in the classroom is shifting strategies from a Teacher Centered to Student Centered Learning:
How to teach in the 21 st Century Traditional Learning vs. Teacher as center of attention timed based memorizing facts work independently Lower Level of Bloom’s Taxonomy: Knowledge Comprehension Application textbook driven passive learning Today’s Learning Teacher as a facilitator outcome based what students know work collaboratively Higher Level of Bloom’s Taxonomy: Synthesis Analysis Evaluation + Lower Level research driven active learning
The requirements to teach in the 21 st Century Traditional Teacher vs. minimal preparation few expectations in performance compentency in academic subject matter liking children was enough no extra training necessary Today’s Teacher extensive preparation and training knowledge about pedagogy certified in area of expertise held accountable for every student’s learning extending training projects necessary
Changing Roles means we need to be . . . Communicative active teach and learn of globalization in the field of international, political and economy world Connected engage in technology to teach critical thinking and problem-solving skills The Ultimate Multi-tasker Constructive encourage assessments help student gain understanding by self questioning
We are now faced with even more challenges than last century, teaching . . . in a multicultural society for construction Of meaning 1. 2. 3. in a standard based environment 7. 8. 4. 5. 6. for active learning with new views about abilities and choice and technology and accountability
Challenge #1: Teaching in a Multicultural Society : influence learning constant change consider that students don’t have barriers of learning
Challenge #2: Teaching in a standard based environment effort to agree on the sets of standards making sure every student meet these standards requirements on using evidence-based practices held accountable for assessing student’s learning with standard achievement measures.
Challenge #3: Teaching for the Construction of Meaning many students make impressive gains in their learning, but the process is not for everyone. relies heavily on the teacher's belief in constructive learning and his/her proficiency with the reciprocal teaching process some teachers are not open to the idea lack of training
Challenge #4: Teaching for Active Learning controlling all the inter-activities promoting collaboration by peer learning creates opportunity for dialogue in the classroom and class becomes loud and creates distraction for those who are not active learners
Challenge #5: Teaching with New Views about Abilities difficult to design suitable materials for everyone (high achievers, average and low level students) providing each student with learning tasks getting all students involved and motivated
Challenge #6: Teaching and Choice public schools become less favorite in some environments providing equality in education for all students
Challenge #7: Teaching and Accountability being accountable for the learning of all students variety of learning needs reporting constant testing distracts from real learning “ control system”
Challenge #8: Teaching and Technology it is the “new culture” cultural resistance/intimidation providing effective collaboration ensuring learning expectation varied assessing learning
National Education Technology Standards (NETS) requires teachers to follow 6 categories : 1. Creativity and Innovation teach technology and create new projects 2. Communication and Collaboration students to communicate with others around the world 3. Research and Information Fluency incorporate technology to research 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Decision Making integrating their technology skills in their projects and their decision 5. Digital Citizenship m aking student aware of the use of technology in their learning 6. Technology Operations and Concepts students demonstrating they understand technology and its use in education
