Tess of the D'Urbervilles is a novel by Thomas Hardy about the destruction of the English peasantry in the 19th century. While the story focuses on Tess's tragedy, it is used as a symbol of how the old way of life for peasants was painfully destroyed. Chance and coincidence play a major role in the unfolding of events in Tess's life. Though she loses her physical purity, Tess remains pure of heart and nature. However, her overly sensitive nature and inability to act decisively contribute to her becoming a victim of tragedy.

The subject of “Tess of the D’Urbervilles” is stated clearly by Hardy to be the fate of a “pure woman”. Actually, however, the subject of this novel is the destruction of the English peasantry. More than the other 19th century novel, “Tess of the D’Urbervilles”has the quality of social document. It is a novel with a thesis and a thesis which is all-pervasive, and which determines the nature of every part of it. The thesis is that in the course of the 19th century the disintegration of the English peasantry reached its final and tragic stage. The way of life had been proud and deep - rooted, its destruction was necessarily painful and tragic. Tess is the story and symbol of that destruction.
Tess of the D’Urbervilles is a tragedy of social and industrial but first we feel that it is a tragedy of Tess, Angel and Alec. After reading this novel many questions arise that,Who is responsible for Tess tragedy?Is Tess “pure woman” or not? In this novel I identify that in Tess’s life many things play roll. We can say that chance and coincidence play wilder roll in her life. Most of the time we feel that at this time this should happen but that will not happen or unexpected thing happens.
Chance and coincidenceChance, accidents and coincidence are, like Nature, tools in the hand of Fate .They are very effectively used by Hardy to intensify his tragic vision of life. They play a very conspicuous and prominent role in the chain of events. We find that prince was die when Tess is riding prince. At that time no other character riding horse and she feels that because of her prince die and she blame herself.
Tess wants to tell her past to Angel so she rough a latter but unfortunately it goes under carpet. And when Angel knew all the things he reject her and told that“ whom I have loved is not you, she is like you” coincidently when Tess goes to Angel’s house to meet his parents but shecannot meet Angel’s parents and overhears his brothers talk and she come back. If at that time they are not talking on that matter so she goes there and talk with them. Then tragedy is not happen in her life.
when she is with women in fair there is quarrel with them so she can not stand there and at that time Alec is passing from there and he offers her help and she has to accept. Here we find her unexpected meeting with Alec.
However, in Tess, the logic of cause and effect plays a greater role in the tragedy and, chance & accident, more often, emerges from the natural law of cause and effect.Is she pure woman or not? Tess is a very good hearted and innocent girl. But then also after the meeting with Alec her physical purity was lost. Here we find that in our society physical purity is the most important thing for woman not for man. Tess is ready to forget Angel’s mistake but he isn’t ready to forget her mistake. If the same mistake done by man than its ok but if it’s done by woman then her purity will be lost. Only for this matter Tess has to suffer or tragedy happens. She lost her physical purity but not heartily purity. She is very kind and pure by heart but that thing could not understand by him. He has high morals so he can not adjust with Tess. After these entire she wish that Angel should live happily so she leaves him. Here we find her purity so we can say that “she is a pure woman.”
Her nature is too sensitive For all the things she always blames herself only forthis kind of nature tragedy creates.Feeling too guilty for the accidental death of Prince. She can not feel that it is an accidental and it can be done by anybody instead of this she blame herself.
Going with Alec in the woodsShe should be careful when she is going with Alec.If she can murder Alec at the end – why can’t she show that courage at the right time? – Had she shown little bit of that courage earlier – tragedy would have been avoided. Somehow her nature is also responsible for her tragedy. When Angel refuses to accept her at that time she has to tell that I told you that you marry another girl or I also informed you before marriage about my past. If that latter goes under the carpet then there isn’t my fault. If she tells something to him then he will accept her but didn’t say anything. Her fault is that “she can not react right place right time.” At the end when Angel comes back she kills Alec. There need not to kill him she can go with him but she didn’t do that and kill him. In this case it is possible that when she finds Angel she become angry that why he comes so late or she is living with Alec as a mistress so for her family her ego and her moral can be heart or in that case she kills him.
